I've read some VW forums that have had users importing South African ones as they're getting harder to find here in re-storable nick or find ones that haven't been butchered.

Yep, sold them as the Citigolf, they updated the interior in 2005 I think with the Fabia interior. Quite a few manufacturers did similar things over there, selling old models just with a few things updated; its main competitor back then was the Toyota Tazz.
