Netgear GS105 question

I've got a friend who has rubbish Wi-Fi, he has a big old house (thick walls) and he asked me to fit something for him to improve it (just for beer money, it's not my living, I'm far from a network expert!!!).

I fitted 3 Unifi AP Long Range Extenders, along with the POE router in his plant room, superb, works flawlessly, Wi-Fi in the back garden now and everywhere else it was ropey before is now perfect.

In his TV room he has a Dune Media Player and a Humax Freesat box, both connected to the network via a Netgear GS105 which is connect to a wallplate.

Here's the rub, we've tried 2 of these switches and neither works (lights are on but nothing), but both devices work individually when connected to the wallplate.

Changed cables, switches (only for same type) and it only works when one of the two devices is direct to the wall, as soon as the GS105 comes into the mix both the Dune and Humax lose connection.

The thought of 2 brand new switches being faulty is so slim, both work in another room with a laptop.

The only thing we haven't tried in this location is a new wallplate, another brand of switch........any one know what it could be?

Cheers

Does just one device plugged via the switch work, or does it only stop working when both are plugged in?

Any chance there's something going on with PoE to that wall port?

Can you bypass the wall port by running a patch cord from the switch to another location?

check for duplicate MAC addresses. we have had 2 Netgear switches that had the same MAC!

took bloody ages to figure it out because you just dont assume it.

I've used a dozen or so of the 105E (not the unmanaged version) without a single failed one so far, no experience of the regular one, though for some reason there is one sitting about on the landing for some reason.

If its the non E model of the 105 it won't have a MAC address, if its the E model should be highlighted in the prosafe utility if there is a mac collision.

EDIT: If it is the E model some have an issue with the power saving system out the box where some devices don't wake them up correctly or something (not really bothered with the details just updated the firmware on the affected models).

It gets stranger.

Both devices plugged directly to the wall (one at a time) work perfectly.
Both devices plugged into the switch at the same time don't work
Both devices plugged into the switch individually don't work.

If I move the switch to another location in the house it works fine (with different kit - 2 laptops connected to it at once)

There are 3 GS105's in the house in various places - none of them work in this location. But all work elsewhere

It's all pointing to the wall plate, the mac address idea had me thinking, but the switch works ok elsewhere, that said the 2 bits of kit work ok into the wallplate. I may get him to order another brand of switch to see what happens.

Is it the E model or not? mac collision won't be an issue with the standard model but there is a known issue with the power saving system on some firmwares.

Are both of the devices only 10/100 rather than Gigabit?

If they are then you could have a wiring fault that wouldn't bother them, but would bother a Gigabit switch.

You need to test with the suspect cable taken out of the equation. If you haven't got a patch cord long enough then either buy one or move the equipment.

Honestly not sure on which model it is or whether the kit in question is gigabit or not. I'm there next week one day so will double check.

Cheers for the pointers

All sorted, took the wall plate off and re-terminated it. Must have been a dodgy connection on one of the pins that was specific for a gigabit connection I guess?

Thx for pointers again
