Hi everyone, need some help choosing an ATX Motherboard and HSF for my brother if you wouldn't mind. He wants an i5 and I've chosen some RAM but unsure what HSF and Motherboard to get, Asus/Gigabyte prefered.

He's currently using an Athlon II X4 620 @3.50GHz and a R9 270X but will likely upgrade the GPU in future and will only ever run one card.

Requirements
Auto fan control from motherboard, min 4 fan headers idealy 5+.
Max HS height 163mm.
Handle an overclock.
Longevity, survive a GPU upgrade or two or three :).

Budget
£400 for MB/CPU/RAM/HSF, but cheaper the better without sacraficing the requirements.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x Asus Z97-A Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £106.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD38G2400HC11CDC01) £69.95
1 x Prolimatech 65 CPU Cooler - 120mm £27.95
Total : £378.88 (includes shipping : ).

Thanks.

Thanks stulid, do you know if the CPU and CPU_OPT fan headers are individually controled, and do they have DC control for 3pin fans?

Also I clicked through to claim the cashback and the purchase dates listed are june/july, has that offer ended?

Thats odd,

It says for item number 145 - 145 Z97X-SLI i5-4690K £ 17.50 18/08/14 - 03/10/14

Let me ask around.

You have to wait 30 days before you can claim.

Ah of course, so as time passes new dates will be shown. Thanks ALD.

Just the question of the CPU_OPT fan header then, anyone know?

I did put the Max HS height 163mm in the OP mate.

So basicly any of these will keep the i5 cool enough when overclocked?

@John24

1. CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT fan headers are individually controled
2. All the fan headers beside CPU_FAN have voltage (DC) mode control for 3-pin fans

In the end we went for this,

full width atx, more fan headers, full 8 phase vs 4 and as a bonus more cashback (I never bother with cashback but he's keen).

Arrived today and will help him get it installed on saturday. Thanks for the help :)
