Road Cycling Essentials

I've cycled the bit between Congleton and Leek, ending up at Rudyard and its fairly hill round there but annoyingly you can't go fast on the downhill sections because they are very tight and overgrown that visibility ahead is really poor.

Some roads can be pretty narrow. But I guess locals come to learn which roads to avoid. Which route did you take?

The pressure of the old saddle didnt really cause me any problems, but it did rub my skin off. 10 mile TTs were ok, but sore the next day. 25s were usually enough to draw blood.

The ISM saddle is great, can happily sit on the TT bike for 50+ miles now without any pain.
I used to have to reposition myself every 2-3 mins as i would naturally drift forward but the new saddle has completely stopped this, which is an unexpected bonus :D

Exactly the same. Felt a lot happier on it. They ok to use on roadbikes or are they just used for TT?

I think they do a road bike version. I have the TT version ("prologue") which is too wide for a road bike. I can feel it being uncomfortable when i sit upright on the TT bike but it's fine for being stretched out on the aero bars.

Got the ISM Adamo Typhoon saddle a couple of months back, one of the best things I've purchased for the bike. Started to notice a slight lack of sensitivty down below, new saddle has done the trick! :o

Didn't really think it'd be an issue, but after some googling it seems pretty common. Original saddle didn't have any anotomical cut outs.

Had a massive energy fail on the way home today. Got about 7 miles in and suddenly felt light headed and massively lethargic. I had a gel on me so I quickly gagged it down (phrasing). About ten minutes later I had enough energy to complete my route but I was still slow as anything. I've eaten tons today too, weird :/

Tried one of those ISM 'half' saddles on my TT bike last night. a lot more comfortable than the regular saddle! Will be on full time now I think.

anyone else a fan of them?
It's on my list of saddles to try once I've exhausted the others on the list. I'm like the others; I'm ok on a 10 mile ride on most saddles, but 50 or 100 and I really feel the front of the saddle poking into my perineum.

I had a nylon Royal GT which I really got on with but it split and I've not been able to replace it. I've been trying out a load of nylon racing saddles in the hope that one of them might be the same but, so far, no luck. Tried a no-name, a Sportex A50 and just took off a Brooks B18, a bit like the leather B17 but a bit narrower and made of thick black nylon with no give. Oh. My. Poor. Barse. Sort of get on with the Selle Rolls, but it looks so ridiculous with the gold on the back. Stuck a Cinelli Unicantor on tonight - we'll see :(

Big man Jens Voigt is going to attempt the hour record.
OH **** YES! BRING IT ON :D

25 miles in the dark for me this evening. It was very still - hardly any wind - and I felt pretty good, so I was going a fair pace all the way round. I averaged 17.7mph, which is good for me over that distance, particularly given some of the unlit back roads I was on. 21 achievements, so pretty happy with that.

Definitely gonna need a turbo soon, I reckon, if I'm going to keep things up over the winter. I've managed the past couple of years going out and doing slower, shorter rides, but I think I'd rather be able to stay indoors and give it some beans. I'll still get out a bit in the evenings, but maybe only once a week rather than the twice I usually aim for.

There's an ebay listing for 3x the fluid turbo trainers I was looking at. I think the buy it now was less than the price of the unit new on Wiggle.

Perhaps it would be worth us doing a group buy?

Which one French tart. After a new trainer but ideally want a road machine or rock and roll. Would go for an alternative if it's at the right price.

Here's the listing:

*..nope..*

It might be awkward to work out but it does seem damn cheap. The reviews for the CycleOps Fluid 2 seem okay (but a road machine would certainly be better for the extra money).

edit: zomgz I'm dumb. It's for one trainer. What a rip off.

I'm looking at picking up the Minoura B60-R. 5 stars at bikeradar, £105 at evans. Bargain. It's only a mag trainer, but hey, it's also only £105.

I have gone few a handful now myself. I ditched the rolls after a few months, couldn't get on with that. Ironically on my n-1 the standard boardman saddle was the comfiest I think.

Tried a brooks, it's still as hard as the road pardon the pun with umpteen miles spanning two years. Prior to my latest selle (max flite gel) which I am still tuning to, a boring cheap black selle from a steel vintage machine I was given seems to be the comfiest so far..

Definitely an individual preference that I think is down to trial and error.

Oh superb! What time did you head out? Which lights did you have? I thought about getting some of those cheap Cree lights from eBay last year to do some night riding but never went ahead with it in the end.

Set off about 8, so it was dark fairly soon. I have a Smart Lunar and a Cree XM-L T6 at the front. I set the Cree to constant and the Smart to flash. On the back I have a Cateye 3 LED one which flashes. I could maybe do with another decent one upfront, instead of the Smart, for really dark riding, otherwise I have to take it slow and rely on my memory to know where the dodgy bits of road surface, potholes, grids, etc are.

Budget is lower than that if I'm honest. We've just bought winter wheels and are going ski shopping soon..

I want to say £500 max, but I realise that probably removes any decent disc brake bikes from the equation.

How much lower? :) £500?

You could pop down to Manchester and pick up my old Cotic X Weekday for less than that to do up :p

I'm not really that familiar with disc-equipped bikes lower priced than that but I'll have a look around whilst avoiding work this morning.
