Destroying a contactless payment debit card

If it can't write to the chip then it won't be a problem as that's where it stores your transaction I believe, so that when you next make a purchase or withdrawal from an ATM it can cross check the previous transaction to authenticate the new one. If that authentication process doesn't happen then it won't allow the transaction to take place. Look up EMV security if you're interested :)

So yes, destroying the chip will be fine. :)

I'm a tad confused by the need - surely when a bank cancels a card, the contactless machine will reject it the same way the chip and pin machine will? I guess contactless does occasionally come across as an 'offline' transaction.

Even if that's not the case, surely the bank is liable either way?

Contactless transactions don't auth online. Neither will a chip and pin transaction if it's below the floor limit. You can give it a go next time you cancel a card (you'll still have to pay it back though!)
