Hello Im looking to upgrade my computer and have 2 options available to me.
A complete tower unit (need a case) the hp xw6600 with 8gb of ram and dual Intel Xeon E5450. Or I could try and upgrade to an fx8350 witha new motherboard.

I would be using this pc for video editing and some light gaming (world of warcraft and such). The HP computer would equate to over £100 cheaper all together. any thoughts and advice would be appreciated :)
 
Not that I'm recommending the FX but supposedly the WoW engine has had some major upgrades in the latest expansion and the beta testers are reporting that it uses multiple threads a lot better now.

Yes, from Nov onwards (post release of the WoD expansion), the game is supposed to be well threaded. Lots of users reporting good load on all 8 threads in beta. I would guess the FX CPUs will do really well on it from then so wouldn't dismiss that option if you play Wow a lot.

What will be interesting then will be how an FX 8-core compares to an Intel i5. As we previously saw in games that utilise 8 threads (e.g. BF4), the FX 8-cores performed better than the i5s despite the lower IPC.

Same amount of cores, same IPC~, but the FX8350 has more MHz so should run better. Then of course you have the advantage of DDR3 > DDR2.

Historically speaking WoW has run more efficiently on Intel than AMD thread wise, I.E The current game uses three main threads so requires at least three cores from an AMD CPU but for some reason has no issue running on a 2C2T Intel chip.

The game is GPU bound at the high end anyway so it's not really like more efficient CPU usage is going to make that much of a difference to anything but temps really.

So there is no real advantage of the 8350 over the 8320 then? I've been considering upgrading from an FX6100 to the FX8350 or even an FX8370 when they finally arrive.
 
I have an 8320 from Q1 2014 batch and it clocks pretty well even on my budget motherboard (on air), results in my sig. I doubt an 8350 is likely to be much better (if at all) at this point.

They are pretty much the same chip and the FX8320 is cheaper the FX 8350 and will overclock to 4.4 Ghz without to much effort and you can push more out of it if with the right MB and cooling.

Thanks, I may have to think about this a bit more then. I recent bought a Crosshair V Formula-Z board and I think my old FX6100 may start to be a bit of a bottleneck.

I was leaning towards waiting for the 8370 (not the E version) but I'm even more confused now.

If you've got that board then the world is your oyster.

I have the same board and my 8320 does do 5ghz but it got too hot. I wound it down to 4.9ghz, totally stable. At that speed it gets very close to where it shuts down so I just stepped back again to 4.7 and it's 24/7 stable (even in the heat wave).

I was going to sell mine but I've decided to put it back in :)

Thanks, my 6100 is currently clocked at 4 GHz but that's only on my old board (a GA-970A-DS3 that I bought cheap when I first built the PC 2 years ago). I was hoping that I might be able to take it a bit further on the Formula-Z until I can get a good price on an upgrade. I think a bit more research may be in order first though. :)

I was playing a trial version of Star Citizen last night though and CPU seemed to take a real beating from that game.

Is the 6100 Bulldozer? I'm finding conflicting info. The FZ will take that chip as high as the chip can go.

Yeah that's the one. Tbh it has served me well and I bought it when AMD were offering their rebate program so I did get a really good deal on it. I'm just not sure how future proof it will be though since Watch Dogs in particular was very unkind to it and it did seem to be a bit of a bottleneck on Star Citizen.

It is a bit worrying that the 8320 is only stock clocked at 3.5GHz though. That's only 200Mhz faster that the CPU that I have now, albeit with 2 extra cores obviously.

As the price for the 8320 & 8320E is the same then just go for the E as its a cooler running chip and will overclock just as well if not a bit better than the 8320 IMO.....

Go with the 8320E it will overclock really well and is cheaper than the 8350 if games is your main focus however for video editing I think Intel does beat AMD on this one and I would look to have 16 gig of system memory.

How about 8320E vs an 8370 though? I don't mind spending a couple of extra quid if it is going to be a better long-term investment.

The E series does concern me I have to admit since I generally avoid low-power 'eco' variants. It's because of 'eco' that I now have to wait for the lightbulbs to warm up in my flat before I can get any decent light from them.
