This is an absolutely ridiculous amount of money.

To give some perspective the previous record holder GTA V had total costs of $265 million.

The top 5 most expensive video games prior to Destiny:

GTA V - $265 million
Star Wars: The Old Republic - $200 million
Final Fantasy VII - $145 million
Max Payne 3 - $105 million
Disney Infinity - $100 million

Considering the massive scale of the development of GTA V and the marketing campaign that followed, where do you think the extra $235 million will go/has gone?

It isn't just the game they've invested massively in the server infrastructure, marketing and support. Also from what I read in the Guardian the $500m is a potential figure, not an actual one. Still mega bucks though!

Hence the reason why I have said "in total" rather than the development costs. The development costs of some of the games are significantly lower than the total cost (E.g. Final Fantasy VII) however I'm just curious as to why barely a year on from the previous record setter the amount of money spent in total is almost double for a marketing campaign that barely seems to be comparable to that of GTA V (this is my bleak observation at least).

Everyone on the Destiny dev team must want to be a millionaire before the game even comes out. I can picture even the office cleaners all turning up in supercars ;)

The couple of articles I read, the suggestion was the cost was so high not specifically because of sequels but more the $500 million includes all the infrastructure costs in setting up for Destiny which this infrastructure can (and presume will) be used for future releases.

Yeah the $500,000 isn't the figure for the game as you will see it next week, it's an amount for the franchise. So considering the expected cycle it's not that ridiculous.

That's not a lot of money. I guess they've cut back on advertising.
