Anyone know Birmingham well?

Yep, just read the Birmingham Business Park part - well if I beat the rush which in fairness you'll get into anywhere in Birmingham then it's about 25 mins for me if I got the M42 way.

Whereabouts are you then Greboth - you most likely will be my closest forumite I am guessing.

I never really found Birmingham to be that bad and I grew up there, Luton is by far worse than Birmingham in terms of drivers.

I lived in Pheasey (Great Barr) for around 26 years and for 5 of those I drove into Birmingham City Centre every day. I never once had a car accident and only came close perhaps once or twice.

Insurance wise I paid £900 for my first year on a C reg Fiesta, then £1100 on a N reg Escort then £800 (slowly decreasing over a few years) on a 04 Focus TDCI Sport and that was in a B43 postcode at the age of 19-25

Overall Birmingham just had a bad reputation, There is of course better places to live but there are also far worse.

Very possibly the closest, I am only down the road in Banners Gate :)

Titash on the Coventry Road/A45 is a good shout, couple of miles out from the airport but shouldn't be more than a couple of quid in a cab. That's my regular local haunt if I fancy some Indian food :)

Titash or Jilabi (Jilabi being one of the best in Birmingham) both along the coventry road Sheldon side. Or some places down Moseley are fantastic if you want to commute.

Ladypool road if you're... feeling adventurous!

Thanks! :)

Insurance at current Birmingham address: £1.4k (cheapest on Confused).
Insurance at my old Bath address: £400 (with the same company...)

It would almost be cheaper for me to commute!! :p

I currently am commuting by bus, train and taxi every day thanks to it! Where I live now in B26 it's 1.2k (10% of B11, all because of a post code eh), but I am yet to drive since getting my license, as the insurance was close to matching my annual wages so it's going to be a little higher. :(

RedvGreen - what will your hours be. If you are 9-5 then that area is a nightmare for traffic whichever way you come in. If you can wangle 8-4 or 10-6 then your journey will be a hell of a lot more pleasant and also you will allow yourself a much broader area to get a place in.

Very possibly the closest, I am only down the road in Banners Gate :)

Your just the other side of the park from me! Funny that.

Are there any proper nice areas to go out in Birmingham? The equivalent of Clifton in Bristol for example (if you've been here).

I've also been looking at moving that way but avoiding the centre and looking more at Sutton or Lichfield.

While we're here what's a good indian restaurant in Birmingham?

I'm heading there tomorrow for a week and staying beside the airport.

Sanskrit in Hall Green is incredible. If you want a more upmarket curry, the Rajdoot just off Newhall Hill in town is excellent.

I've just moved away from Birmingham this week...can't believe how many of us live around there, should have had a social!

Yes, there are plenty of great areas to go out in Birmingham it depends what you want to do when you are out. What specifically do you mean by that and we may be able to offer suggestions.

Sutton is great I live just north of there. It is a safe area little to no crime bar one pocket on the east of Sutton (Falcon Lodge) and even there is fine tbh. Sutton Park is really nice and the town is okay for odds and ends but tbh you'd do most of your shopping over Tamworth. Lichfield is great but travelling into Birmingham from there can be a pain - the best thing to do and what an awful lot of people seem to do is to drive to Blake Street (which is the first stop in the West Midlands Travel Zone) and then catch the train from there into B'ham.

Number one would be Moseley, followed by Edgbaston south of the Hagley Rd, and then Harborne. All great. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield are both fine too, although there's lots of Synthia Bucket types around.

Avoid Chelmsley Wood, Winston Green, Sparkhill, Balsall Heath, Highate and Nechells like Ebola.

Haha I agree there are a few around but then Moseley is full of SJW sipping skinny lattes so you can't really win.

To reemphasise NO!

Worth bearing in mind where you go out and where you live don't have to be the same place. Moseley and Edgbaston are pretty busy.

Might be worth the OP saying what he likes eg bars in walking distance, no noise at night etc (case you don't want to be by the NEC with all them planes), etc. I guess we all want different things out of an area.
