Basically I'm probably taking the family to Menorca for a quiet holiday to Menorca next year and while we are there it will be useful to have a car to get around.

Problem is I went to Menorca about 10 years ago and hired a car in my name then - the night before we left we got a parking ticket and since none of us read Spanish, we didn't realise that if we could find the attendant that gave us the ticket we could have paid a nominal fine and that would have been it!

By the time we'd got back to the villa and translated the ticket it was past the time deadline so we just ignored it, dropped the car off at the airport the next day, crossed our fingers and jumped on the plane.

Now I can't imagine they would keep records going back that far but I'm a bit concerned that I hire a car this time around, they input my passport number and sirens and flashing lights go off and I'm shipped off to jail for avoiding a penalty all those years ago!! :D

Just hire the car in somebody else's name but with you as a named driver only if you're that worried.

I got a parking ticket in Murcia (Spain) back in March 05, went back in October the same year hired another car from the same outlet and had no problem whatsoever!

The ticket was still outstanding, didn't get any comeback.

I wouldn't worry too much, just dont go with the same hire car company (if its large the make sure you are not renting from one of its affiliates), likely that hire car company has you on a Do Not Rent list but thats it.

or death penalty!

I was in Menorca in June this year. Beautiful island. I happened to rent a car, too.

Now you mention it, I do remember seeing a bounty on your head.
