What I'm after is a website ideally with an android app (but could just get location from my google account) where I can pre plan a route and it can plot current location and progress until the end of the route.

Anyone got any ideas of apps/web services that do this?

Driving, walking, cycling? Do you want sat nav like directions or more go a route planning tool? I use an OS map app on my iPhone for my hill walking rote planning which works well and has the function of updated gps locating where it's available and bog standard map interface with your route overlaid when it's not. Much easier than carrying 3 separate maps on a walk

It's so people can see how a "challenge" is progressing. It's not for the people actually travelling the route but for twitter followers etc to see how the event is going. We know where we're going and what the route will be. It's a combination of running and cycling.

Sorry that wasn't very clear in the OP.

Waze has journey sharing, not sure weather it's between just 2 people or if you can share wider than that though.

I was going to suggest this too, but Waze only allows you to share with other Waze users so not sure it's suitable.

Nearly all the long distance events and adventurers these days use SPOT trackers for this. A phone doing this is going to die pretty fast. The transcontinental cycling race use them as well as most people going for the around the world cycling record. If also seen numerous bicycle tourists using them to track cross continental trips and they hold up very well. Not the cheapest things to buy though.

I don't really want to have to buy any hardware. Battery life isn't an issue as I can keep my phone plugged into the support van.

Use map my walk (or map my ride) on a phone. It has an option to make a map showing your location public. Used it for a sponsored walk last year.

Ideally, I'd want the current location but also it show the full route, waypoints and some stats about the route so far.

I'll take a look at Gylmpse.
