Hi Guys

Setup my *******.asuscomm.com Dynamic DNS name, I can access the router externally via HTTP, I setup a forwarding rule for 3389 to the main PC but I can't connect the the windows 8 machine externally, I've setup remote access on the PC

Is there anything else I might be missing?

Banging my head against a wall here :)

I wouldn't recommend opening up RDP to the internet. A better option is to use VPN. I don't know what the stock firmware allows but with Merlin's firmware you can use Open VPN. Once connected you will be able to RDP to the machine's local IP address.

As for the RDP issue itself, you'll need to allow remote connections to the Windows 8 PC. You can do this in system properties on the 'Remote' tab.

Hmmm im interested in doing the same here. Can you explain a little what u done please imacmart ? I have the asus ac68u it has the vpn function but not understanding quite how it works.

How do u access it from another random machine ?

Setup your asus dynamic DNS address, turn on VPN PPTP and pop a username and password in for security then off you go, tethered MacBook Air to Nexus 5 and started the VPN first time

Just need to fix rdp and I'm done

So I've setup the PPTP VPN, I can RDP in over that

I've also popped a 32GB USB pen in the router and setup FTP, read onlibe there was a security flaw in this at the start of the year, can't find out if it's been patched?

Anyone know if this is the case

Thanks

You shouldn't be using PPTP if you care about privacy.

No need to worry about the FTP vulnerability if you're using the latest firmware.

Which protocol is the most secure?

I'm on the latest Merlin so that should be fine

Thanks

OK I can't seem to get openvpn working although I thought I'd added what was needed and had a configuration file to use

Are there any step guides about?

Thanks all

EDIT: Nevermind I managed to get it working!

Might be missing something here, VPN is connecting a treat but I now am unable to RDP to my main PC? I am unable to ping it, I can ping my NAS drive and map to the shares but for the live of me I cannot get RDP to work....

Any suggestions? It worked fine over the PPTP protocol (albeit not as secure)

Thanks
