I confess, all audio matters confuse me.

I've aquired a set of jbl control one 150w bookshelf speakers, and I would like to use them for my tv, as the sound is appalling. What sort of equipment would I need to get these going, as I take it you cant just plug them in!

Cheers

Probably an av reciever of some kind. You might want to think about a subwoofer as well. I'm still absorbing info about speaker set ups so someone else may have more detailed advice.

Brand wise denon, onkyo, yamaha, Cambridge audio, all do av receivers. As for best models I can't advise as don't have that level of detail.

I thought it would involve one of those. Problem is I would probably have to spend around £150 to get something decent, and I don't know if I even like the speakers, first world problems yo.

They are passive speakers so you'll definitely need some kind of amplifier. Your cheapest bets would be to look for a used receiver (make sure its got a built in amp as well) or one of the many class-T amplifiers available (assuming your TV has some kind of analog audio out).

On a side note, looking at the specs it only has a 4" woofer so don't go expecting the best bass response. As Lartyconshayo mentioned above, you may want to consider matching them with a powered sub.

Good advice I reckon. You don't want to be spending too much for these speakers, a t-amp might be agood purchase from new, or perhaps some sort of vintage stereo amp s/h.

Edit - as NP says, will need to know what sort of outputs the TV has. If you've got a phono or even headphone out you could go the stereo route.

Could do with knowing what TV you have, or if you know what outputs it has, what they are.

Using headphone output is not a good idea. Hopefully you have RCA audio out or digital optical out, as they are far better.

That's good to hear. No point going for an AV receiver though, unless you want to add more speakers later on. I'd go for an integrated stereo amp, new or used, or possibly a T amp. T amp will be much smaller, but they generally have one or two inputs at most.

A Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 for £80 from Richer Sounds, is worth considering.
