Last year, my housemate and I were living in a two bedroom apartment in Manchester centre.

Primary uses of electric-
Water boiler
Dish washer
Electric stove
Panel heaters
Two computers

We were with EDF energy.

Do you think it's possible for the bill to have reached about £1800 in 9 months?

I read recently that electric boilers can cost around £1500 a year to run. Is this true? We never touched any controls on the boiler (we were/are a bit naive about how it works). It would have been on whenever we used hot water for the taps or shower.

That seems a high amount. Cost me and gf about 60quid a month for both gas and electricity. (did you have heating on a lot?)

I've got an electric boiler, my electric bill is less than £30 a month. The only thing I've touched since I moved in, is to turn the "boost" button off, as it was a waste.

Was your hot water permanently on ?

Your using electricity to run Heating and Hot water ?

I only pay £40 a month in winter family of 4 in a 3 bed house.

Judging by our smart meter, in a 3 bed house with 3 occupants we're using on a bad day £2 worth of gas and electric, that £2 was with a chicken sat in the oven for several hours. God knows how you've used all that.

Easily if the water tank was sat on all day, and gas is far cheaper to run hot water.

As well as what he said, we can guess that he wasn't remotely on a good rate and didn't shop around for a good rate.

Now I've lost my super cheap fixed rate, I'm now averaging about 90 a month and that's using gas for water/heating. It is easily achievable to run up large bills when you don't take any responsibility.

Easiest way to check is compare the start and end readings, if he has them.

that could easily be the cause... I've got a very efficient electric boiler, it essentially uses some electricity at night and that is sufficient for hot water all day... though it also has a timer to configure and a 'boost' function... if you've used a lot of hot water and absolutely need a whole load more right now etc.. if you've left it on all day and/or have some extra function turned on too then your bill could get very high

What's a cheap rate these days?

Seems a bit high to me - when I was renting we used about £60 a month during the winter and £30-40 during warmer months without heating on.

If it's true it's the boiler surely
It's the only possible scenario

Unless you are new to the building and there is some crossover from precious occupants

Have a plasma tv
Av receiver
Htpc
Microserver
Multiple laptops
Electric oven
Other bits and bobs

Our (2 people) bill is about 45 per month on electric and about 8 pounds gas Inc standing charge per month
Lots of that is the tv/htpc/Av.. This is on most evenings for 6 hours or even in background
This seems more than you except the boiler

I can therefore only think you have your boiler on constantly

Should say on 11p per unit and gas.. I don't even know. Only 4 pounds of that 8 is quantity

Stupid question did you ever tell the supplier you were there ? Have you ever given them meter readings or have they been billing you based on estimates only ?

Our electricity is 60ish month but we have gas hob and heating, electricity to heat water and house will easily ramp up to a bill like yours.

We use a fair whack of electricity as quite a lot of stuff on and kids attached to their computers etc - same ish per month for gas so combined not far off your bill but with gas being vastly cheaper to heat water/the house!

Unfortunately we had to rely on our concierge to get readings and he wasn't the most reliable man to respond to requests.. But we did get a few. I've just made this table with a summary of the reads.

BTW we were billed a sum of £180 in January based on their estimate of our usage - I think - from Nov-Jan.
