Evening all,

Been recently looking at these after being impressed with a car i saw at a local dealer. The folding hardtop and the Airscarf seem to make great sense for a convertible that con be used all year round.

Although I've just hit some information regarding major issues with the balance shaft. I am looking at the early models (2005/2006) with around 65k miles. Is this something i should be worried about?

Some sites say 10% of cars are affected, some say all the cars before a certain engine batch (Some time in 2007) are affected. Any help regarding this and any other advice or information about these would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I can't get the vin at the moment, but I am assuming that it was the earlier models before 2007? I'm going to look at 54 plate this week, so unfortunately I don't think I'll be lucky enough to get one that's got the improved shaft on it.

What I really want to know, if the engine falls within the range of VINs. Is it guaranteed to fail, or is it something that only affects certain engines within the batch?

As for going Amg, insurance companies kick up enough fuss about one of these due to being 21, not that I wouldn't want one!

Took out today, very impressed with the folding hard top, minimal wind noise when closed compared to equivalent rag tops.

The 7g auto box was very smooth, although there was a lot of lag between flicking a change paddle and the box waking up. The engine, pulls hard and smooth and sounds awesome.

Looking at another tomorrow, really onto this prospect.

Unfortunately the box is pretty much the same for the 55. You have to pull the paddle about half a second before you want to change gear.

I mostly leave mine in Sport mode and let it change itself. If only a manual had been available it would be near on perfect.

Info on your '55 please!

I'm now on my 3rd attempt to buy one - first time I got sidetracked by an RS2, then a VXR8, then a house move...and now I'm back for the third time lucky.

Seems hard to find any that have been (what I'd term) "properly looked after". Most seemed to have been bought by clueless people who give it the bare minimum of care.

(Sorry, de-railing the OP's thread slightly).

Drop yourself into the Merc/AMG owners thread and their are pics of mine.

42k 07' 55 so with big brakes, has paddles not buttons fitted, Air Scarf, COMAND Nav, Harmon Kardon, 5 Spokes. Merc History up until the previous garage had the gearbox fluid done at a specialist so I have my German Specialist work on her now.

Great car, the noise is just simply excellent.

Well, got myself the SLK. Really pleased with the noise and performance, the only thing that bugs me, is when trying to change down, the paddles/buttons at the back of the steering wheel dont seem to do anything.

Although, By moving the gears elector left or right the gears change. Any advice?

Cheers
