Hello

I have a Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC (in my Son's PC)
I also have trixxx installed (from Sapphire) to help with OCing and fan control.
Also have installed latest CC and drivers.

At random times the GPU fans got to 100% and will not change from this until a reboot.
The GPU is not showing as too warm and the fans have just switched to 100% at 50c (under no load).
Even if i now try to manually control the fan speed (in Trixxx or CC) nothing happens and the fans stay on 100%. only a reboot seems to work.
This seems to happen at random times, even when the GPU is hardly in use (just general web browsing, etc).
Current GPU temp is showing at 46c (with fans at 100%).
Room temp is around 22c.

FYI:
The PC has just had a full format (2 hours ago) due to the PC being full and messed up and random BSOD (so my first step at curing the BSOD was a full format).
(no more BSOD yet, so hopefully this part is cured)
The Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC is only around 3-4 months old, bought from OCuk.
The PC has a goodish case and goodish ventilation (never had any overheating problems).
There is currently no OC on the CPU or GPU (other than what it is shipped with).
All other components are bought from OCuk over the past few years.

Any ideas what this can be?
Maybe a driver issue?
Faulty GPU?
GPU heat-sync not fitted correct?

Thanks for any help
Jon

I hope that 46c is not the idle temp. My PowerColor R9 290 PCS+ is currently idling at 38c with the fans at 30% (room is fairly warm too). I do have a slight issue with my fans not going past 30% though if they are left on auto. I have to set up a manual fan profile using third party software (currently Gigabyte OC Guru II)... I can't even manually adjust the fan speeds using the overdrive option in the AMD drivers!

I take it you don't have any other fan software running ?? Any motherboard software ?

In CCC when just in windows web browsing etc if you have the power view open what MHz is displayed in the overdrive screen ??

Hmm 50c is the idle temp, the 46c is with the fans at 100%
is this not normal?

I have the motherboard Asus software (thermal radar) running, all still on default settings. But i have just looked through this, and i dont think it controls the GPU fans at all .

While browsing the net (no load)
The MHz in CCC is showing as 307MHz.
The current temp is 54c
The current fan speed is 20%

The case has reasonable cooling (nothing special or extreme, but enough )
1 front bottom in-take fan (blowing air towards the GPU),
1 top in-take fan pointing just in front of at the CPU cooler
1 140mm out-take fan an the back (by the CPU and above the GPU)
1 intake side case fan blowing directly onto the GPU
All above fans are controlled by the MB.
The GPU has the 3 fans it came with

EDIT* my son had added a custom fan profile in Trixxx, i have now uninstalled this, and adjusted the above figurers

Do you have two monitors plugged into it? If so then the memory clock will be at full whack the whole time causing higher temperature. then again it's still a bit high even for that. Try opening your case up fully and see if the temps lower,.

What are the at load temps like?

Yes, it has 2 monitors! (1 at 1080p with HDMI and the other @ 1440x900 with DVI)

He says the load temps are usually in the 60's but i dont think he is sure as he is a teenager and no matter how many time i tell him to keep an eye on temps he would rather play the game and watch youtube than monitor temps....(he says 60s as he think this sounds right and does not want to have to return the GPU in case he is left without one for a bit....)
I have set him a task of play games and monitor temps for the day... so ill report back later.

I have just tried taking the side off the case to get better air flow, and this made no difference to the GPU temps (as it removes the side fan too....)
