Gaming on a TV is not a good thing!

Been using a small TV as a monitor for a while not and it just isn't cutting it. Everything feels very slow and laggy.

I'm guessing most monitors would be an improvement but is it worth going for 144hz over a 60?

What types of games do you play and what will you be using the monitor for mostly? Whilst I love my 120hz monitor for fast paced games, there are times when I'm watching movies where the poor viewing angles of the TN panel really do detract from the experience...

On the other hand, I'd say for any sort of competitive game playing 144hz is a must. (As long as the rest of your PC is up to the task of feeding the monitor with frames that is).

A lot of civ5 mainly. The odd fps now and again, some flight sims.

I'm running a 290 at 1080, the current TV has an IPS display which is probably the best thing about it. Wouldn't mind going for another IPS.

Hmm, in your situation I'd probably go for a nice IPS screen. Civ5 really doesn't warrant a 144hz monitor and whilst I don't play flight sims, I don't imagine that a 144hz TN panel would provide a nicer experience than an IPS for those either... Depends on how seriously you take your first person shooters I suppose - 144hz really does give you a noticeable competitive advantage.

I'm not all that good at fps to be honest, I tend to play for my own amusement rather than competitively.
Would I be right in saying the quicker the response time the more in sync the mouse is with the monitor?

No your problem is input lag which is how long an input takes to show on screen after you've made it. This is a function of the TV/monitors electronics doing it's image processing and isn't normally specified in the tech specs. Input lag is typically high on TVs and lower on monitors. Modern TVs sometimes have a game mode which reduces input lag.

Response time is the time taken for the pixels to change once the electronic signal has been sent by the controller and is a property of the display panel.

Refresh rate is the number of signals per second sent out by the monitors controller. To make the most of this you need to have a panel with a short response time so the signals sent can be shown before the next signal arrives.

I would say it completely depends on the TV.

I'm currently using a cheapo 19" supermarket special (think it's Technika or some other super-budget brand) as a "monitor" while I decide which 24" to go for. The PQ is absolutely terrible, ridiculously high gamma, washed out colours, and latency slower than a glacier!

However I also have my PC hooked up to my LG 42LH5000, which is completely the opposite - great picture quality, and no real latency (obviously it's not going to be as good as a 144Hz screen, but it's perfectly adequate for games like Borderlands 2, Tomb Raider, The Witcher 2, etc.

Haggisman, we agree on something!

I use my Panasonic VT50 55" Plasma for 1080p gaming and that's looks great and doesn't have any (noticable) input lag.

I have an AOC q2770PQU 1440p monitor for things like Civ V....games that need a mouse rather than a controller pad.

The computer was perviously hooked up to a 47 inch lg 3d and never had an issue with it.

That is the monitor that i am currently using, i got it from another retailer a while back when it was on a really good offer. Its a fantastic monitor, games i play are mostly wow and the sims/sim city/skyrim. I did play doom 3 on it not too long back and was brilliant. Sound quality is really nice too for monitor speakers but dont expect amazing.

The tv im using as a monitor atm (sony kdl32w653) until i get a 1440p monitor is pretty good in regards to response times in gaming mode. 17 ms which is very good for a tv

This quote reinforces me in my thinking that you'd probably get better overall enjoyment out of your monitor with a 60hz IPS. The one you've got in your basket looks good :)

Your call to make, but 144hz really only starts to shine with fast moving on screen content; the smoother overall desktop experience is also nice, but for me would not outweigh the benefits of good viewing angles and colour accuracy for your usage scenario.
