So i have an xfx 280 dd gpu with an amd fx8320.
Im looking to buy a monitor to replace the sony w653 tv im using at the moment.
I play a variety of games bf4, wow, csgo as well as muli tabling poker as part of my living etc.
So would i be better off getting a 144hz 1080p or would an r9 280 be good enough to run 1440p on decent settings?
For example, would medium settings on bf4 on a 1440p monitor look better than high/ultra on a 1080p monitor?
Regards.

Personally I wouldn't bother with less than 2560x1440 at this stage... maybe if you can wait a bit longer, more exciting high refresh models are on the way soon.

But if can't wait there are lots of decent WQHD variants about depending on how much you value IQ, latency, inputs etc...

I would suggest WQHD over Ultra settings FullHD anytime but that's just a subjective opinion, I'm sure others will have different views when they chip in! :)

Would be quite surprised if you could run games like bf4/skyrim etc on a 2560x1440 res monitor on high settings with good frame rates (ie 50 or 60+) on only a XFX 280 gpu tbh.

Indeed. Seems to run about 40fps on ultra in bf4 according to most reviews on 1440p. But at high/medium i guess it could be a little more playable

I have GTX670 2Gb with a 1440p screen and Skyrim even when modded out with all the super-duper graphics enhancements it’s never drops below 60Fps (game cap). Battlefield 4 it’s been a while since I played it but it will be fine even at 1440p, the only time I used to get slowdowns was on busy 64 player battles but that was because the game somehow managed to max out an overclocked Core i5 3570k (maybe Mantle helps out with this now?). So I would agree with the first poster in as much as you should be looking at 1440 screen as 1080p will be wasted on a card like that.

I own one of those Korean imports monitors you may have read about (popular because they were high quality IPS panel sold dirt cheap and some models could be ‘overclocked’ to 120hz), it’s blooming marvellous to look at although the warranty could be an issue if it should develop a problem. OCUK used to sell DGM 1440p displays for £300 a time which is good deal considering OCUK handle any RMA’s but I think they have stopped selling them now but there’s plenty of others to choose from.

Very interesting what you're saying hrmm.. did you have ENB mods and HD textures on your Skyrim as well?? And consistently above 60 fps? That convinces me even more there mustve been something wrong with my graphics card then. I had a MSI R9 280x with an i5-4690k and with ENB Realvision mod and other HD stuff my fps would be around 38 - 45 maxed at 1920x1080....

Sounds interesting.
I will go for a 1440p monitor as in the future i can always sell my 280 and get a 290 or equivalent with the new cards.
Ill have a look over the next few weeks with the new releases etc.
I play on my 60hz sony bravia w653 at the moment which tbh....has excellent colours etc and even the imput lag is only 17ms which is amazing for a tv.

Yes its a Qnix I didn't want to say the brand as ive previously had my posts deleted when I've discussed it before.

For mods I was using the unofficial high res texture pack I don't know about ENB but I host of others running in the background.
