I have no idea how many people know of this or what not, but saw the story and thought I'd start a thread :).

Link. (Only half decent link I could find besides the Wall Street Journal)

Thoughts? What do you think this will mean for Mojang? For Minecraft?

I guess, Microsoft can bring a professionalism and support that Mojang just could not get, however, it's sad day to see indie developers sell out, or rather become part of the machine. What makes PC gaming (and gaming in general) is the community and out of the community often something amazing happens.

Interesting to see if Mojang do anything else, or if this is just so Microsoft can 'have' Minecraft.

It seems to just be rumour at the moment. We'd been hearing for quite a while that Google were in the last stages of acquiring Twitch, until they didn't.

It's like what I said on another forum.
Some company/person waves 9 zero(I know billion is 12 but US n all) figure under your nose , Principals/Community well being go straight out of the window!

Does seem a lot though.

I can understand why they might want to buy them, can't understand that amount if its accurate though. Seems far too much.

The article does mention that he made $100 million in profit last year alone, another article mentions he took home £101 million the year before that too. Bear in mind that the US billion is only 1,000 million, it's not a huge stretch to think that Microsoft think it's worth something to them.

Cos gamers are such a wonderful appreciative bunch, I'd give up the chance at buying a small country for them too ;)

The UK billion is also recognised as 1000 million officially, as we use the short scale for numbers past 999 million.

It is however still a lot of money, and would take MS quite a few years to make a return on.

We use the same quantity of zeroes in our millions, billions, trillions and so on as they do in the US.

A billion in the UK and US are both 10 figures, 12/13 figures isn't ever a billion in short or long scale.

As an avid Feed The Beast (modded Minecraft packs) gamer and server owner I wouldn't be too pleased at this point but it is just a rumour and I'd be very surprised if this were true. This deal would have to go past Notch and he isn't the type to sell out to bigger companies like MS but it is easy to say that, and then look at the whole Occulus situation.

Windows phones with Minecraft bundled in, anything to get their failing phone and tablet products into more homes.

10 figures, which would be 9 zeros 1, 000,000,000

In the long scale 1 billion is 12 zeros 10^12 eg 1,000,000,000,000

Damn politicians!

My kids adore Minecraft but I actually think we are reaching Peak Minecraft nowadays. So it is a good move for Markus to sell out. Although it is a little ironic that on the PC Minecraft is so dependant on Java - a technology that MS have always hated and tried to beat. Will it be converted to .NET instead?

When I first found out about Minecraft I searched for posts by Markus Persson on javagaming.org and found some very early questions from him and asking people to try a beta of a new sandbox game he was writing. It was interesting to read the start of it all on ther, albeit with only a few posts. I can't seem to find it now.

Good on Mojang though. Well done.

Why would MS want Minecraft? What would they possibly want with it? Or want to do to it?

Very strange if true.

Really hope this isn't true, otherwise wont be long before they make it an Xbox/MS exclusive in a desperate attempt to punt more of their hardware products :/

What a waste of money MS have truly gone mad  why not spend that on PC gaming instead not a short term flavour of the month!

This a proper lol moment. Talk about MS clutching at straws.

I can't wait for Minecraft 2, only on Xbox! (P.S. Please buy our console! :()

Then again maybe EA will buy it instead, then the fun will really begin. :D
