....your small plane is on fire and you can only retrieve TWO of the following items before the plane blows up and engulfs everything in flames.

It with be 28 days before you are likely to be rescued.

What TWO items do you take with you, and why?

a) large roll of duct tape
b) box of matches
c) swiss army knife
d) magnesium fire starter kit
e) large saucepan
f) water purification kit
g) machete
h) compass
i) large plastic sheeting
j) small bag of uncooked rice

(Follow up answers at #283)

Plastic sheeting and fire starter kit, easy.

Plastic sheeting can be used to either lay on the ground as a blanket or be rigged up as a shelter.
It can also be used to collect rainwater, which will be drinkable.

Starting a fire is one of the hardest things to do under pressure and can take hours.
Fire is important to cook with, boil water, dry clothes next to, keep warm and scare away animals. It can also be used to make smoke signals for a speedier rescue.

Machete and magnesium fire starter.

Hunt, make things (shelter, drinking vessels) as well as clearing your way through the jungle with the machete. And the fire starter for easy fire starting, better than wasting energy trying to light a fire with friction.

g) machete
h) compass

Knives are the most important tool in a survival kit. You need it to hunt, to build shelter and to travel. Also, if your in a jungle navigating is very difficult. Compass is critical to travelling any distance.

Fresh water is the most important tool in a survival kit.

Use the sun and stars as directional compass, without a map a compass is not that useful.

I'd that the Machete and water purification kit.

Would easily survive 28 days with the above, hell a fit and resourceful person should be able survive 28 days with nothing in hand!!

Anyone who takes firestarting stuff is wasting a choice. On top of that Jungles tend to be very wet and humid so you're not going to find much to burn anyway.

Water purifcation tablets are a must. At a push 28 days without a decent source of food and shelter is doable. Without clean water you can forget it.

Jungles also tend to be quite warm so I'm not going to worry about shelter too much, rescue will be here in 28 days so no point trying to get anywhere or navigate, my next priority will be food. Either the knife if I fancy my chances at finding any huntable wildlife or take the rice and make it last if not.

By the time you have all argued over what are the most useful items you would have all burnt to death :p

My initial thoughts though were the Machete and Water Purification Kit
