Spec me a replacement for my Z4

I'm continually amazed by how well the S2000 holds it's value. There are a couple of decent looking cars on AT under 50,000 miles. Post 06 tax hurts every year, but honestly I was expecting you to come back with insurance >£2000. My first year was well over £1k aged 27. A seriously good contender for you, but very different to the Z4. Drive one and see what you think.

If you like your Z4, seriously look at the Z4M. You might need to push up a couple of grand, but I'd take one over a boxster of the same age I think.

I may have seen a couple of ok examples of Z4M for 15k budget... sorry to get your hopes up, I was originally looking in 10k budget but forgot I upped the bracket.

Almost bought one myself the other month... :D

Nice idea - off the wall. Do you mean something like this? If so there's no way is there enough boot space.

The 05 (I think) and later models have a front boot space:

And the coupé has more space in the rear:

I'll see how the other brokers go, but £1200 lands me in some pretty serious machinery - I think that kind of insurance on top of the post '06 tax and the fact the car's are generally a bit older for the money probably negates it a bit for me - unless of course the bubble doesn't burst...

Currently not prepared to spend more than £10k really, £500 or so perhaps, but at least £2k more on top of the higher associated costs. Not sure I can justify it.

Call a couple of brokers for insurance first, comparison sites aren't great for these types of car IMO.

That's true, will try Flux or Greenlight tomorrow. They're not competitive on the Z4 though.

£12k is the minimum for a nice one I think. Unnecessary though in my case, the extra power will be a bit wasted, plus it's pretty firm already!

Now that's actually quite usable, it'd be like a little Elise or something. What are the pit-falls reliability wise, one of the ad's I've looked at suggests waterproofing is a major issue?

VX220 is also looking good at the moment, though perhaps too old for SWMBO.

The smart roadster seems like fun until you use the lolworthy gearbox.

Your budget would get you a fantastic and newish mk3.5 mx5 and it suits your criteria down to the ground apart from space (chassis wise it has a lot of similarities with the rx8 actually, but is lighter and more nimble). Might be a bit lacking in imterior quality compared to the z4 and the engine may not amaze though. Id certainly suggest driving one and seeing what you think.

I tried when I looked at the RX-8 - can't get in it. The steering wheel wouldn't adjust high enough, despite the head/leg room being ok.

Edit: The Smart's gearbox is that horrible automated manual isn't it. That's a real shame, any drivers car should have a manual IMO. For example, there's a lovely condition 2007 25k mile 3.0si Z4 around the corner from me with all the options for £10k, unfortunately, it's an auto. Has the paddles, but still - an auto?

I think a facelift 3.0 Z4 sounds like your best choice. Even if you could stretch to an M, the fact they had to raise the battery into the boot means you have a lot less space.

The 986 will be properly old inside, but it is a lovely car to drive. I went from a 986 S to a Z4M and they are very different, the Porsche is so precise.

All the main contenders are mentioned so you'd have to see which you prefer really. Off the wall suggestions might include larger softer cars. S4, Merc CL500, CLK500, SL350, SLK350, BMW 645 are all nice for cruising but running costs are a step up on many of those.

If you can't find an unmolested E46 M3 then how about the best 330Ci you can find? Stretching to the E9x series would put you at the bottom of the market which is not something you want to do. Alfa do a nice looking convertible but I've no idea what they're like.

A 911 is ideal from a format perspective, but I can't justify the running costs, and cannot afford the potential repair bill that will come from a £60k car. I get that I could simply get the IMS bearing replaced, but that adds more money to the purchase price, and frankly it's too much for me at the moment.

996 are dirt cheap to run. Everything is available aftermarket and it's easy to work on.

All the parts cost no more than an E39 530i.

Would love one, and have looked around a lot at these, but they seem more like mid-teens money rather than sub-£10k. As for non-Ms, I had to do a search to see if they even exist! Seem to be exceedingly rare - only 2 on PH, and none on AT.
Non-M Z3 Coupes were LHD only, apologies :p

I hadn't realised the M Coupes had gone up in price. There were some below £10k when I last looked.

He probably got shafted unless the engine went pop.
Considering he's rebuilding the engine, I suspect it might have.

If they're serviced regularly, they are pretty solid reliability wise. The main issues with waterproofing the SAM unit can be fixed pretty easily by sealing underneath the wiper blades. As for roof leaks, mine is pretty solid. Number ~39,500/43,000 so a lot of the early teething problems were worked out, I just have a little dripping inside after opening and shutting my door with water sitting on the roof.

I think Vince (who owns one) might disagree that a 996 is cheap to run!

Yea mine certainly hasn't been, I have owned it (1999 C4 Cab) since Feb 2012 and in that time I would say it has been on the road for approximately 8 months. I spent 16k on the car and have put approximately 7K into it since. I will give a quick outline of my issues and possible other issues.

First up I started to get an intermix, oil in the cooling system. First time the engine was out I replaced the oil cooler, a metal coolant pipe which took 3 months to get here which had to be ordered from Germany and had all the manifold bolts drilled out as they were totally rotten. Total cost ended up being just shy of 2.5k for the work. They were sure the problem was with my oil cooler as it failed pressure tests.

A few weeks later, massive amounts of oil in the water again. So out with the engine again, this time both heads came off and were sent to a specialist. The left hand side head had developed a crack which basically ran the length of the head, a search got underway for a cylinder head, Porsche will sell you one which if I remember rightly was somewhere in the region of 3k. That wasn't really an option, in the end It cost me £1500 and a good few months of waiting. I ended up giving up the search for a new head and took my head to a local head specialist called benchsound who reworked my original head for me.

New gaskets, head bolts, rear main seal, clutch & release bearing as well as a load of other parts I needed to put it back together plus labour at mates rates and before I knew it I was another 3k in.

Took it to get its MOT when I finally got it back and as it was on the ramp a seal gave away on the oil cooler. So it went back in my garage again. I replaced the seals myself on the cooler, realistically at this point I can put it back on the road but I decided to give it one last flurry before I do and a couple of weeks ago bought some service items for the car before I put it back on the road, having taken apart the front end, both the cooling system and air con system were both shot. so a trip to design 911 and I came home with:

Uprated metal blade Water pump - £160
Uprated Low temp thermostat - £190
Radiators - £130 each
Air con kit to replace the rads and dessicator - £200

In total I spent £1100 on parts that the car needed to do with the cooling system and am fitting them myself.

So granted first time around things were missed, and money was wasted in labour but realistically spending almost half the cost of the car again to get it right can be what your in for buying at the bottom of the market.

My 10k Boxster S on the other hand was perfect. To find out you pay your money and take your choice. :)

Other well known issues with this engine (the 3.6 as well) are bore scoring, cracked bores, Intermediate shaft bearings going causing havoc with the bottom end etc etc To be honest there are all kinds of issues that you read about, some people think that up to 10 or 15% of cars have these issues others suggest its as few as 3-5% of cars that have issues. It's down to whether you like those odds or not. For me my cheap 911 wasn't so cheap but is a good little project car.

I wouldn't imagine mpg figures etc would really matter to be honest and i cant imagine they would be much different from the 2.5l z4, but for what its worth anything from 18 - 32mpg was possible depending on if you decide to give it a hoon or not.

Edit: Thinking about it op should buy a Boxster S, they are fantastic cars.

As Vince above shows - people say "Oh the maximum a 911 will cost you is £2k and the labour to fix it" but completely forget that cars are not an exact science, multiple things can go wrong and issues can pop up again and again.

The biggest bill I'm sure a 911 can chuck up in one go is £5k, but you could easily spend £10k in 12 months as multiple issues pop up.

911's are not cheap cars, especially older ones.

You bought a nail that cost you money...that doesn't mean they're all cost a bomb to run.

Oh and also, you got ripped off for your low temp thermostat.
