i had originally planned to buy my first gaming desktop this week but i honestly feel like i should wait and see what is happening with gpu's and etc until i pull the trigger on it,

i assume you guys know more than i do about what's going on and release dates and etc, i'm quite patient and i've waited ages to get a gaming desktop, whats another month if you get what i mean?

basically, are new gpus on the horizon in a month or so?

I'd wait and see what the new cards bring us.

I spent £600 on my ti a few weeks back - I'm not playing at 4k so I shouldn't be running out of vram any time soon (if developers stop being so lazy...). This is the primary reason I didn't get a titan as well, my DHS beats them with ease.

Saying that, if you're happy to wait then why not? There's nothing to loose and you'll either get this gen slightly cheaper or a next gen power house for a couple more quid than the present cards.

hi
I would buy now before the new gpu's arrive.
Prices are low and i just got a pair of gtx 780's
if the 3gb is not enough for you then wait and pay a lot more.

yeah, good points mate, cheers for info, im swaying to 290 but just going to wait it and see what i can get.

new GPUs wont be anything worth waiting for, perf would be the same, no new features, it's just kind of a rebranding with a new architecture, dont even know if the efficiency would be worth mentioning, the new GTX 980 will be probably at the same perf as the AMD 290X at double the price...
the reference 290X on promotion is cheap, but i wouldn't advise for it unless you are going to watercool your rig, other wise pick a costum cooled one like Sapphire VaporX 290.
so the real new Gpu worth waiting for is 20nm in about 6 to 8 months from now, and that's way too long.

I can see why as I had 2 R290s MSI TwinForzor Cards in my PC and my PC heat build up was so bad it felt like it was melting !

Even with the side panel off the heat output was so bad both cards would throttle straight away !As a single card it was fine !

with the heat issues people have had with em you can see why they 269.

even ltmatt amd rep **** said he prefers the reference 290s and that was from 3 free cards

First of all, the cards are supposedly meant to run at up to those temps, so I don't know what you mean by heat issues.
If you'd said noise issues, then I'd understand.

Secondly, if you were running three cards on air, wouldn't you rather have heat being exhausted out of the case, rather than into it?

What's with the personal insults?

personal insults  matt is a amd rep joke !

i said matt had 3 which were oveheating and he preferred the original ones

pass the bong when you done.

Oh right, I obviously read 'amd rep whore' in completely the wrong way. My bad...

i said matt had 3 which were oveheating and he preferred the original ones

Really? Where in this thread or the post I quoted did you say that?

Perhaps I shouldn't pass the bong, as you've obviously overdone it on your last hit. No wonder you're posting all the confused smilies.

DG makes no sense, the 290 and 290x reference cooler is the same, they're as bad as each other.

And the cards do get stupidly loud and hot, have a reference 290x myself and wow it's loud and hot.

Guys, 290X reference are only good for watercooling. There they shine.
They are not for the average user.

There are plenty of 290s and 290Xs with custom coolers that run quiet and cool.
Huh even my 295X2 runs more quiet under load than my 780!!!!!!

with the heat issues people have had with em you can see why they 269.

There is not such thing as heat issue. The chips were designed to run hot.
Noise issues with the reference design blower, yes. But not with the custom ones though.

As for the advice wait for the GTX9xx series to either buy that or because the price of the 780 will drop.
The first is your choice to wait for the GTX9xx. The second ain't going to happen. Any offers you find right now on 290X and 780 are as good as they will ever be.

Any left over stock after the new cards, going to be very limited if not existent and at higher prices.

Good example last year. The 7950/7970/7990 were going for dirty cheap money (I was stupid that didn't bought a 7990), until the 280X hit the shelves. By that time it had disappeared from the selves, and anyone who was waiting for better deals, never arrived. Another example the GTX780 6GB. Everyone during the summer was waiting for the GTX8/9xx to buy them cheap. (me included). They disappear from the market completely, and believe me for the money were better deals than the upcoming Nvidia series.

Hence this time I didn't do the same mistake. 295X2 for 699? Yes please. "Let the world burn" now. It will be next year at least when at the same money this card going to be beaten, by a dual GPU solution of course. Single card to beat it? Possibly 2016-2017 or when 16nm process is at full scale.

I'd do what I already did and go 295X2. It's literally a monster. For £700 what exactly are you going to be able to buy in early 2015 with better framerates?
