AMD 7990 Case fan speeds

what are the case fan speeds for the 7990 because i think i need a speed controller ????

because mine don't seem to speed up whilst gaming, maybe because they're controlled by the CPU and that never gets too hot, it's about 700 to 800 rpm idle. the 7990 starts overheating at 90 degrees but the case fans remain the same, i feel no air from them either, these ones are the Corsair AF120 LEDs

What case you got, mate?
I'm thinking you do need some way of bumping your case fans up, which is usually a fan controller.
Keep the CPU cooler doing what it's doing, but get better airflow in under that 7990!

I assume you dust your rig out at least once a month?

it's a Cooler master but i might start using the Lian again, the 120 mm input fans are about 700 to 800 rpm but dont feel strong at all......they're Corsair AF120, i cant feel any draft under the GPU....or even with my hand right in close to the fans, it's like they're not running !!!!

The Lian has twin Apache Venum Viper 140mm intakes , but i stopped using the Lian because the case was too big ...........the lower fan was good, that blasted right under the GPU......even at only 700rpm

the 7990 is overheating very quickly since i put everything in the Cooler Master, so i want to see if i can improve it or not by switching back to the Lian and if not adding Water cooling.

i cant increase the fan speed in the Lian yet, because the speed controller hasn't arrived from Overclockers yet..........i've also ordered small fans that'll go on top of the 7990 Backplate.

the pc case is open sided, it always has been, it gets dusted every day !!!!!

the Megahalems is always cold whilst gaming, even at 4.7 and most of the time the output CPU fan is never on. But i think that the CPU temp controls the case fans speed as well, because i never hear the case fans speeding up..............only the GPU fans

there's nothing wrong with the fans being fixed, but the rpm needs to be higher.........the i5 was about 1000 rpm

Try it with the side panel ON. I don't know *which* CoolerMaster you have (you didn't say), but odds are the case was designed to work that way.
I know if I run my 500R open, the temperatures can jump by as much as 30ºC!!

A controller will help bump those case fans up to where you want them, too.

If the air is moving through the case correctly then it would be better to put the case panel back on. This will help direct the air through the case. However if the exhaust isn't removing the hot air fast enough then the heat will obviously build up.

Where are the fans connected to? If direct to motherboard you should be able to control them via the BIOS. By the sounds of it they are currently set at a certain speed or controlled according to CPU load which won't help the 7990 of course. You could set them to 100% and see if that works in the interim.

If it does - great, get a manual or automatic fan controller and attach the fans to it.

If it doesn't - your current set up isn't sufficient for exhausting the air. Look into new fans or altering the airflow plan

cooler master silenco, but heavily modified

the case fans are running at 680 rpm (all of them), right up to 50% load and then this rises to 900rpm all the way up to 1500

but whilst gaming the CPU is down at 45 % load, maybe even lower...........so the GPU is getting very hot whilst the fans are still only doing about 680 rpm

i would like to see them fixed at 900rpm.

Are they PWM version did you say?

The motherboard should have options for this. Very crudely, you could say:

WHEN cpu >25oC, set fans to 50% (so, nearly always)
WHEN cpu >50oC, set fans to 100%

and see what happens

the fans are connected to the mobo, ok i'll use the other pc and put the side back on, increase the speed etc

they're set to workload only via Easytune, which i've never adjusted anyway .............its 40% workload 800rpm

the cpu and case fans have the same graph shape, it's origin starts at 30%, but by 50% CPU load ( when the fans start working properly) you've already had it, because the 7990 has heated up long before this.

i havent given this enough thought till today......... the fans are way too slow below 40% load.

ok i just run Heaven, it's really bad :eek:

cpu temp was 40 to 45 degrees in Benchmark via Core Temp 64, fans at 600 rpm all the time, GPU overheating at 92 degrees, i then stopped running it.

the GPU is much hotter with the side panel on, the CPU is about the same or slightly cooler, i can not game anymore till this is fixed............this case is useless, it's too small and crowded, i must use the Lian instead

In what way?
Might these mods be affecting the airflow feed into the GPU?

conclusion:- the fans are running far too slow because the CPUs temp is too low, i can not game anymore till this is fixed
I'd definitely be looking at a fan controller here. Maybe one that alters the fan speeds depending on the temperatures? Whack a probe on the GPU (measure actual vs probe temps) and set the fans to respond to that?

Do you get adequate cooling if you set the fans to just run at 100%?
Have you always had heat issues, or is this a recent development?

the silenco has the hard drive bays removed.... so it has 3 intakes, 2 X 120s and a 140 in the top front............. but the 120s are those useless Corsair AF120s

i might try the fans at 100% now

at 100% fan speed it's better, about the same as the side panel off........... but the Corsair fans are rubbish at 100%, hardly any draft on the back of my hand..........ok so now i know what's wrong..

finally, the card is undervolted at 1.095, but every time i go into MSI it's back up to 1.2v :mad: i'm getting really fed up seeing this.
