Microsoft to buy Mojang?

It's the 3rd best selling game of all time. So yeah, it's still worth quite a lot.

Well yeah but have most people who are going to buy it already done so, what will sales be like a year from now?

I'm not saying they can't continue to make a lot of money from it, I'm just genuinely curious, I would have thought they would have needed to get in there a bit sooner.

This a proper lol moment. Talk about MS clutching at straws.
Naah, Microsoft know exactly what they are doing. They already hold numerous patents on thier xbox that Nintendo and Sony have to pay into, they make billions in royalties on patents for handheld phones, etc.
Now they are going to make even more from licensing Minecraft for Sony, Apple and Android.

Microsoft could add a lot to minecraft, personally I think that with all the money mojang makes more money should have been used to increase the rate of updates/features, if Microsoft did buy it we could see a better minecraft.

Problem with Minecraft on the whole is that it was coded in Java as we most know. What we don't know was that the game was never meant for modding as it stands now.

Feed The Beast modpacks are where its at now, to the point where plain vanilla minecraft is stale. It is hard to go back to vanilla after experiencing FTB modpacks and their simplicity as the modding scene is massive and the developers hugely talented.

Minecraft's code is a mish mash web, constantly being rewritten by Jeb (project leader) and his gang to extend the life of the game. Imo Jeb has done much more to MC since he took over then Notch actually did. MC v1.8 for example is the biggest change to the game yet adding multicore rendering and heaps more to the engine.

Why would MS want such a cobbled together PC game? I know the very name (minecraft) carries a lot of weight but this isn't some game they can easily mess with and tinker - I refer to the PC version here.

However due to it's relative simplicity, I would imagine it wouldn't take too long to rebuild from the ground up...

I doubt it's the actual software MS are really interested in, more the rights to the name and the design.

He may end up being a hypocrit but he would be a hypocrit with 2 billion dollars in his pocket:) With 2 billion you wouldnt give a toss what people say.

I will be glad if this goes through. Even though quite a big update came out recently the rate and quality of their updates is a bit poor. A few cosmetic blocks, some random **** that one of his indie dev friends suggested (snowmen etc) and that is it.

I just hope microsoft dont ruin it and turn it into a different game.

I'd imagine that it's not the minecraft code per se, more the IP. I was in next the other day and kids where snapping up the merchandise and toys and begging parents to purchase

I'd expect that this plus the actual game will more than make up for the outlay!

Not gonna lie, I'd sell out. There is love for your project and your work. And there is 2 billion dollars in cash.

There is a long list of things I'd be willing to do for 2 billion dollars.

Never played minecraft, i have nephews that are mad about it and rave on and on.

Its seems like electronic cocaine full on. So i will stay well clear of it.

As for the sale, it just stinks of everything that is wrong in the world 2billion could feed cure etc etc.

But we are where we are.... SELL SELL SELL and do some good.

5years old and still probably one of the most played games accross the globe and all ages.
I can see why MS would want that! i doubt they paid 2billion straight out either, most likely stock options ect.

Confirmed by Mojang...

Notch, Cark and Jakob leaving as part of the buyout.

Edit: Mojang website is down lol, had the window open so here's a Copy/Paste of the announcement:

Yes, we’re being bought by Microsoft

by Owen on September 15, 2014

Yes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft.

It was reassuring to see how many of your opinions mirrored those of the Mojangstas when we heard the news. Change is scary, and this is a big change for all of us. It’s going to be good though. Everything is going to be OK. <3

Please remember that the future of Minecraft and you – the community – are extremely important to everyone involved. If you take one thing away from this post, let it be that.

We can only share so much information right now, but we’ve decided that being as honest as possible is the best approach. We’re still working a lot of this stuff out. Mega-deals are serious business.

Why did you sell Minecraft?
Minecraft has grown from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. Though we’re massively proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch’s intention for it to get this big.

As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He’ll continue to do cool stuff though. Don’t worry about that.

There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. We’ve worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development. We’re confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.

Minecraft means many different things to millions of people across the world, and to each and every Mojangsta. We feel that this is the best way for everyone – you guys included – to benefit.

What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?
There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future.

We’re extremely proud of all editions and the awesome things you have achieved through playing together.

Is the game going to change? Will we still be able to make videos, mods, awesome builds, and all the cool stuff we’ve created over the past few years?
Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don’t know specific plans for Minecraft’s future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it’s ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone’s interests.

What about the Mojang staff? What’s happening to you guys?
Though it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

What’s happening to the other Mojang projects, like Scrolls?
We don’t know yet. We’ll share any news as soon as we do.

Will you still be able to tweet about features and interact with the community on a personal level, just like you’ve done over the years?
Yes! That’s not going to change.

How much money was the company bought for?
Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars.

Thanks for reading everybody.

I'm sure he cries himself to sleep on his bed of money!

And watch the floodgates of hate open up now.

I wonder how many "I'm never playing MC again, **** you MS" posts there are going to be.

Well that sounds reassuring.

I'd love to believe the people who say this won't change much but I can't. I'd be happy to be proven wrong but I really doubt the dev team will be left to their own devices.

So, uh, GFWL integration anyone?

I'm guessing my 7 year old son will have a very long wait for the ps vita version now. As in it won't happen at all.
