On the M40, cruise control set to 80. Sat on the inside lane as traffic was clear, someone was overtaking me in the middle lane. Likely to get a ticket? I slowed down when I saw the van but as I understand it, when you see the van it's already too late.

80 indicated or actual? If it was 80 indicated you may be ok. As most speedos overread a bit you could well have been doing around 76mph anyway which, depending on the thresholds the police in that area use, could be within tolerance.

Just that annoying period of having to wait and see.

Was this in the Audi? If it was you'll be right on the cusp of what they'll normally prosecute for as the speedos in recent Audi's tend to be very accurate, within 1-2mph at that sort of speed. The other thing is, if you were being overtaken, the camera will probably have been pointed at the other car, so you might get away with it regardless.

An sp30 on a license rarely makes a blind bit of difference to insurance unless you are lucky enough to be young, in which case it's a right of passage :D

I would be quite surprised if you got anything for that. I wouldn't be worried unless doing 85 or over - indicated that is.

:edit: Oh so I actually read the thread - I would be a little worried but the fact that you were being overtaken at the time should help you sleep a little easier at night.

I spotted a van on a lay-by on the M20 on Saturday, was doing around 77-78 overtake, thought it was an ambulance at first, hope it was! :(

If you did get caught at 79 its likely you'll get a speed awareness course, if you haven't done one in the last 3 years? They're giving these out like confetti at the moment. Ridiculous really. Hopefully the camera operator was only looking to get the 85/90mph+ people like common sense says they should.

Really i just informed my insurance with a sp30 the first i have had in 20 years and they slapped a £150 premium on it and im 46.

Inside lane and a van overtook you in the middle lane? Isn't that undertaking?

Edit: the the post again and now I get it.

Probably

I don't know how the courses operate.

I've seen VOSA sitting in laybys on the M20, but never a camera van. I'd also have thought that if there were using a camera van on that motorway, they'd prefer to sit on one of the bridges instead.

Never heard of a VOSA van, what exactly do they do?

could have quite easily been them to be honest as there vans look similar from what i can remember like this:

Also the van was facing forward towards traffic in some diagonally positioned lay-by, hopefully not a mobile unit then!

They should really raise the speed limit to 80, 70 makes no sense anymore, especially when the motorway is literally empty!

They will load your premium mid-term as you're a captive audience and don't have much choice.

I'd bet it will make sod all difference when you shop around for a renewal, might be interesting to run some quotes on the online comparison sites anyway, it's entirely possible you could save a few pennies by paying a cancelation fee and switching.

Guess they are checking road worthiness, probaly looking more at commercial vehilces, but that's just a guess.
