What would you do (job related)?

A good commute saves money and improves your well being. Plus you save 3 hours a day to spend at home. It depends on the specifics of the companies and industry and how you can progress in the different jobs. You could look at working at 3 for few years then making a move to something better than 1 and 2. I think 1 and 2 would be more worth it if you could get £45k

Not enough information to decide IMO (though I'd probably rule out the "not so good" company, as I'm assuming that to basically mean "rubbish"). You haven't told us the field you work in, what you currently earn, whether you'd be expected to work additional hours outside those listed, how stressful (or not) and how much (or little) responsibility the jobs entail, how good the career prospects are, how valuable the benefits are to or whether there would be any option to lessen those commute hours (eg. by working flexibly, or from home), or basically any other useful information.

3 becuase **** travelling, in my opinion work starts the moment you set off for work

those 3 hours spent travelling over the 40 mins equate to

legal 28 days holiday.

104 days in weekends off = 233 days at work 233* 3 = 699 hours or an additional 29 days a year not with your family.

vs 93 .2 hours

if 615.8 hours a year are worth 2k to you then go for 1 :) that's not including travel costs.

sure you might end up earning twice as much in x years but you also might never see your kids grow up your life your choice.

Enjoy family life and see your kids grow up. Three hours a day (and probably more) will be a killer in the long run. I would be looking at 1 if you could move much closer.

Three hours a day commuting will soon become very tedious and downright depressing if you run into problems (traffic, accidents, leaves on the line etc.). I do roughly two hours a day but that can skyrocket if there is a serious accident along the way.

From what you've said, I would probably go for number 3 as the extra 2k from the other two will easily be gobbled up by transport costs alone, benefits aside.

Actually I've changed my mind. I commute 4 hours a day but, thinking more about it, would happily take a £2k pay cut to avoid that!

Definitely choose 3

Would 3 even be a pay cut? The cost of the commute for 1 would eat into his salary.

If anything, he might actually be better off financially and time wise with 3!

work to live
don't live to work

enjoy your family, and don't spend 3 hours a day sitting in a car.

where do you live? 38K in London not so great 38k in t'norf seems fair wage

Option 3 with the young family you have, I would bet with jobs 1 & 2 you would only see your toddler at weekends otherwise!

Move on to another company in a few years when they are a little older

It depends. Making ends meet with 38k in London is entirely possible and still go on holidays and afford yourself certain luxuries, you just have to be a little bit better at managing your money :)

I am so much happier if I can get home and have a few games, then bath-time/bedtime routine, and I think my Mrs appreciates the break after being with the sprog all day.
So its a win-win to get home earlier and spend more time with the family.

2k is nothing, if the job is secure, then you can always wait for something else to come along that is closer, or if possible relocate :)

4) Tell them all to shuv it, poo in everyone's letter box, bitch to the daily mail about how the poles have taken your job and then claim every single benefit that has ever existed.

3 hours a day travelling and not seeing your kids as much as you'd want? I've seen friends marriages fail in similar circumstances. Option 3 money is not everything.

Best to be closer to home, unless family can move closer to number 1, number 3 wins.

Also, with kids, you never know when you're needed, 1.5hours is a fair distance to rush back on emergencies.

This thread makes me want a new job closer to home :(

My commute is currently 2 hours 1 way, leave at 7.30am, get back at 7.10pm.

It can be brutal
