hey guys,

i currently have a single MSI R9 290 gaming card at stock speeds, i maybe getting a refund for my 7990 that i sent for RMA, now the R9 290 im using is from a friend of mine, so as the price of the card has fallen so much i may get another, thoughts?

I've got 3 in tri fire and temps @ idle are around 38-44 and while benching and gaming, they hit 80'c with the fans set to 50%.

They scale really well :)

As long as you've got decent airflow they're great. In my H440 the top one always throttled @ 94C, though even throttling they still kicked out more fps than anyone could ever need at 1440p

Using three reference 290X's and the cards are all at identical temps. It's a thing of beauty and great for temp ocd. :D

I expect this will change when i put the fourth card in later today, but we'll see. Nonetheless my rig is ready for 4K Sniper Elite V3 with x4 supersampling now.

EDIT

AIB cooled cards really only works well temp wise in crossfire and even then you should be looking at two slot spacing for the best temps. You can make trifire work if you have good spacing and keep the side panel off of your case, but it's not ideal. If you want to run 3/4 cards on air, then it has to be reference cooled or water cooling.

im using 2 powecolor 290x pcs+, with 1 card in the temp never goes over 62-63c and totally quiet. with 2 cards the top card goes to 75c and the bottom card goes to 64c, there is a little noise but tbh that's while gaming and u won't really notice it due to the sounds from the games via headset or speakers.

You running an 8370E now Matt? That must hurt having gone from a 3970X :D

I have lots of hardware at the moment Greg. i7 3970X, FX 8370E, A10 7700 APU, Kaveri FX-7600P laptop touch screen, Athlon 5300 quad core apu. Still got the i7 in my main rig, the FX 8370 is in my second rig driving a 290P with 2400mhz mems.

Running two here, they never pass 80c while gaming.. very quite also and look stunning.

As above pointed out, Because none Reference GPU's push there hot air into the case, you need very good spacing. Here what I did and works a treat.

You need one more Noctua Industrial fan in there Shanks! I don't know how you can sleep at night. :p

Nar it would just fight with the H80i intake. :p I have them running 1000 rpm very, quite and more a lot of hair.

Although for the Price I dont think there worth it over the Apache blacks..
But because there 120mm it's let me move them closer down to the GPUs and move the H80i back to the back again.

This how it used to look.

Edit
And also get rid of them horrible loud stock H80i fans haa

Im using a asus crosshair v formula z mobo, what options do i have spacing wise to run two of these cards?

Also im looking at getting either a air 540 or 450d, what would you recommend for two 290's?

What CPU chipset is the motherboard? 1155 or 1150? etc

I love the 540, gives stunning air flow, looks stunning. Easy to hide all the cables and PSU etc.

The downside only two 3.5 Harddrive slots at the bottom. Headache if like me wanting to have the GPU at the bottom.

But you can get your Ghetto mode on you can always do this if you need them at back or have more then two 3.5 HHD

You could run 16x top slot and 8x in second from bottom slot.

Your Motherboard supports dual 16x 16,8,8 and very bottom is 4x

You could try the Dual 16x see how temps are, then if not so good can always from down two slots to 16,8 speeds and have very good cooling.

You wont notice much from 16x to 8x anyways.

Surprised you are running the Intel 3970X in your main system. That is like someone who works for nVidia running a 290X in their main system

Doesn't advertise well :D
