What would you do (job related)?

Talking from experience I would say go with 3. It really affects the relationship with your family if you're not around most of the time. End of the day if your family is happy then you're happy :)

I don't think the reality would be really that much extra time with your kid though? When you factor in normal life, what extra time do you get?
With feeding, routine and everything, it wouldn't boil down to that much difference. It's not like saying you're going to work from home half the time, or work from home compared to the 3hrs of commuting a day. The difference I feel would not be much.

Emergency, you're needed to get home/school now - 20mins vs 1.5hours.

Finishing work and home in time for tea, and put them to bed after vs a long commute home, possibly catching them before they go to bed or they've already ZZZZ.

That extra time daily makes a huge difference than the weekend spending parent.

His wife might appreciate seeing him more and helping with the routine.

Wife might have plenty of family support nearby to help with routine, and wish husband to have great success in a prestigious company with great prospects, or an OK company with great health benefits - perhaps they have a family medical history and private insurance would be useful?

Spending more time at home is not, in and of itself, always the best decision for a parent.

As a comparison, when i'm on a client site i can be out of the house from 7am - 18:30pm if the traffic isn't to bad, in this scenario i see my kids for ~30minutes a day before they go to bed.
When I'm in the office im out 9-18:15ish so see my kids and extra hour at least a day. Its not much but it trebles our time together on weekdays even if there just having there breakfast / getting ready for school. :)

Personally I would never take a commute over time at home!

How long is your current commute? As jumping from something local, say 15 min each way, to something not local, 90 mins each way will soon dawn on you. My commute is normally 45-60 mins each way (depending on traffic) and even that can be a nightmare. Personally i'd go for number 3, in net terms it's better pay, and gives more family time. Besides you may find another job a few years down the line that has better pay and is as close to home.

If you are undecided about #1 then it's probably not for you. You HAVE to really want to do it, you can't be half-arsed about that sort of job otherwise you'll just quit within 6 months.

By "career prospects" what do you mean? More money? A different role? What's the top salary band for the role you'll be going into, what's the salary band for the next role up the slippery slope?

Definitely 3 - you'll see much more of your children and save money on the travel - and your Mrs will love you for it and the extra pair of hands you can provide at bed and bath time!

3 easily

If you tack on commuting time to the daily hours assuming you work 48 weeks a year you're looking at 2880 hours a year at £13.89 for prospect 1, 2640 a year at £15.15 for prospect two and £16.84 an hour for 2256 hours a year prospect 3.

That's without taking out £5k for travelling on options one and two when the hourly rate would drop to £12.15 and £13.26 respectively. Which all adds up.

Then to put into context how much time you'd be wasting commuting to company 1 compared to company 3, 624 hours a year or the equivalent of 78, 8 hour working days. If I told you I could give you 78 days off a year would you say no?

Prospect 3 has the least amount of hours, it pays the best and if you have any confidence in your ability you will be able to turn a less than reputable company around, it's better to be known as the guy who turned some old stale company into a titan of the business world than just another worker at a reputable company.

If you value your time and you're prepared to work hard in work, company 3 makes the most sense by miles.

Interesting attitude to commuting, unless of course it's by car, in which case I agree and I'd never EVER commute anywhere by car.

Commuting by public transport is great;

pros:
1. you can be drunk
2. you can read a book, watch a film, browse the tinterweb
3. can nod off if tired.

cons:
1. costs a lot
2. sit next to ****** and ne'erdowells

Commuting by car sucks;

pros:
1. not a lot

cons:
1. must be sober
2. costs a lot
3. can't fall asleep
4. traffic

pros:
1. you can be drunk
2. you can read a book, watch a film, browse the tinterweb
3. can nod off if tired.

Agreed, commuting by car is not fun. If I had a short(ish) commute by train it would outweigh these pros for me.

Also, when will there be free WiFi on trains? That would be sweet!

My current door to door commute is 1 hour, but only costs me £2k per year. Not sure I'd be willing to add another hour per day and £3k per year, so in all honesty I wouldn't take any of them.
