2009 Golf 1.4 TSI. 7 speed dry clutch DSG gearbox. Car has been in for replacement clutch pack under warranty in 2011 and 2 months ago it went in to have the synthetic oil swapped for mineral oil under a recall.

Fast forward to yesterday, my wife starts the car (it starts fine) but then tries to move off, and this happens:

Overheated gear box message, from a cold start. Same problem this morning. There is no drive. The car revs in neutral but won't rev in gear.

I sense a huge bill and / or a huge fight with VW. Excellent.

Yeah I imagine it's a sensor as well.

I had a similar incident with the G|mpess' Seat Leon, nipped down to the shops in it and when I tried to start it back up, the engine warning light flicked and then shut the engine off, it would rev but as soon as I dropped the revs it would cut out.

I left it for 5 minutes and then tried to restart it and fired up like nothing had happened.

Not had the problem since.

That's a pain. Good luck getting it sorted but as mentioned above it may just be a sensor as it can't actually be overheated from startup.

I thought you had an extended warranty on the car ?

I would try disconnecting the battery to reset the multironics unit (unless you have access to VCDS you can do it with this software)

You can now get the multironic unit rebuilt by a 3rd party as VW are more than likely going to want to replace it.

If it went in for gearbox work two weeks ago, and now you have a gearbox fault message I'd be all over VW demanding they fix it! It's too close in time to be a coincidence IMO!

It's been two months, but yeah.

Had a phone call from them today. Mechatronic unit keeps blowing fuses apparently and needs replacing. £1,074 including 60% goodwill from our warranty specialist team sir. ****.

Just trying to draft some kind of weak arse reply to try and persuade them that this cannot be a coincidence. But it can though. Unless I argue that the precise issue that's the subject of the recall has caused the failure.

Drained crummy fluid through the mechatronics.
Replaced the clutch pack.
Put fresh fluid in.
Solenoids knackered due to crummy fluid swished through mechatronics.

Accidentally did the same on a standard tranny. I think the sample applies to the DSG mecha.

Absolute no chance of a coincidence here imo.

Bugger, the bad side of the dsg. While it's a very good box it knows how to throw big bills. Have you tried looking at a refurb or ringing vw head office?

I want you to be right, but the mechatronic fluid is separate to the gear box fluid and was not touched by the recall, which only replaced the oil in the transmission unit. Therefore I don't know that I can argue that. My only hope seems to be to claim that I've fallen foul of the issue the recall was trying to rectify.

Not yet sir. I'm trying to arm myself with information before calling vw. I'm not considering a refurb, because I'm assuming that my bill wouldn't be that much less than for a new one but without the peace of mind (lol).

The other annoying thing is that my car would have had its mechatronic unit replaced under recall if I'd been Australian or Chinese.

Update: sent the dealership an email arguing reasonableness of the duration of the part, synthetic oil recall not being done soon enough, and that the mechatronic unit is subject to warranty extensions and recalls in other countries. They called VW on my behalf and they've agreed to supply the part for free with two year unlimited mileage warranty.

But I agreed to pay the labour, which is a few hundred. Better than a grand though, so pretty chuffed.

Good effort mate.

I’ve had various issues with the TSI units but in manual.

2009 supercharged GT 150 bhp - supercharger would just stop working when it felt like it. No warning...... no lights or sounds in the cockpit. It just...... stopped working. Would take a turn off and in again to fix.

It also had to have a new box fitted (manual) as it lost sixth gear - literally wouldn’t engage - mechanic at VW couldn’t explain it and after three visits to the garage they eventually threw in the towel.

Then for a brief while had the 1.0turbo engine in a 2014/15 model which also had to go in for a gear box rebuild after about two months from new.

I now drive a Passat GT estate and a lovely thing it is too - I’m sure it will explode the next time I turn left.
