Just moved about two weeks ago, gave old landlord our forwarding address. Find today that she has opened all our post and put it in one envelope. Now there were some financial statements and stuff like that which weren't updated until recently. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to open mail not addressed to you and I'm now concerned about identity fraud.

Is it worth pursuing further?

Why would you open the post to put it in one envelope . Just get a bigger envelope.

Waste of your time taking it further but still wth.

If your mail went to the wrong address and you think someone opened it

If your post has been delivered to someone else’s home, the person who receives it is not allowed to open it. Post cannot be opened if someone knows or suspects it has been delivered to the wrong address.

If you believe your mail has been opened by someone else or tampered with, you should report it to Royal Mail on 08457 740 740 (Textfone 08456 000 606).

(1)A person commits an offence if, without reasonable excuse, he—

(a)intentionally delays or opens a postal packet in the course of its transmission by post, or

(b)intentionally opens a mail-bag.

(2)Subsections (2) to (5) of section 83 apply to subsection (1) above as they apply to subsection (1) of that section.

(3)A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him.

(4)Subsections (2) and (3) of section 83 (so far as they relate to the opening of postal packets) apply to subsection (3) above as they apply to subsection (1) of that section.

(5)A person who commits an offence under subsection (1) or (3) shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to both.

Thanks, have asked them to stop immediate and either forward or return to sender. All important stuff has been updated. Just so angry who do they think they are!

Can't be legal for a landlord to open a tenants mail to see if they have any debts.
something is very wrong if that's classed as a reasonable excuse

Yep got it back today

The landlord replied to my email tonight and said "I thought I was being helpful, I wont bother in future"

Lol admitted to opening my post in writing

citizens advice website also says
  • If you think your post is being intercepted

Interception of communications means someone who is not the intended recipient accessing the content of mail, a telephone call or email. Examples include a landlord opening a tenant’s post or a private investigator using a bugging device to listen in to someone’s phone calls.

Most of the time it is against the law to intercept other people’s communications in this way without their consent. However, there are some instances where it is allowed.

report it to royal mail for sure
Mention the email of the landlord admitting it to :D

Report the ****

if no satisfaction after a month or so then just poop through his letter box/or just send her one in the post...

They are a pretty arrogant middle aged couple who put nothing into updating the property in the five years we lived there. They wanted to up the rent last month, we asked them to redecorate and replace fraying carpet, they ignore so we gave noticed and moved to somewhere better for same money.

The cherry was they were on a four week holiday they didn't tell us about and only came back 4 days before we moved out as the noticed had been served at their address. I think they were bitter about us moving and couldn't find too much to take our deposit on
