U2's new album: Songs of Innocence

I saw on Sky News earlier, whats her name with her entertainment show… Lucy Cotter. A lot complaining and getting bad PR for how this album was sent out.

One tweeted saying, Apple to Tim Cook how do I uninstall this U2 malware.

:D Quite rightly too, why do I have this album sitting in my otherwise untainted music library, disgusting.

Don't care if it makes me an old fart, I bloody love U2. Realistically their albums are never going to reach the heights of the Unforgettable Fire to Pop run but this is good! Much better than the dull MOR rock of the last couple of albums. There's a few fresh sounds on there, and some reminds me of Boy/October but brought up to date if that makes sense.

Bono's voice is great on this record as well. I know people love to **** them off but the fact he's actually made an effort to work on his vocals over the last five or so years says a lot. They could easily phone in a few gigs and keep raking in the millions. It's not studio trickery either because he was great live on the last tour (just can't remember the words, but that's nothing new).

California, Sleep Like a Baby Tonight stand out tracks for me too.

It's funny that you say about his vocals. I think it's horrific these days. Whiny naggy tone to his voice. I guess I'm still comparing him to his days of singing Unforgettable Fire, Still haven't Found, In a Lifetime, Helter Skelter from Rattle and Hum, etc. He just don't have that power anymore. Even Clannad said that she didn't ask him to perform 'In a Lifetime' during her last tour due to his inability to hit the notes. She asked Brian Ferry (which did a crap job anyway).

But I guess it's technically better than before, it's just not 'great' anymore. For me anyway.

It's the first thing my wife said when it appeared she then accused me of being an idiot as she thought I'd actually wasted some money buying it. :D

I think I'm right in saying he didn't have any vocal coaching for a big part of the band's career. History is littered with vocalists who sound great but wreck their voices in no time because they don't sing properly and look after themselves. No doubt Bono's voice was better back in the 80s but cracks were starting to show through the 90s (losing his range mainly). I think it probably hit a low point around the Elevation tour.

His voice might not have the same character it once did but it's technically a hell of a lot better these days.

The "BIG" headlines on the net was that this album was forced on peoples devices . It's in the cloud , NOT on whatever your using.... You still have to download the thing

I love U2, my parents loved U2 my name was inspired by U2 and as I got older I began to appreciate another depth of the meaning of the lyrics. Such a great band in my eyes and Bono + The Edge is my favourite combo. I am certainly not complaining about a free album as I'll be buying it anyway.

No, it has nothing to do with the actual data, it's the way it gets attached to your account. Like how if you download any app, ever, even if it's free, it sits clogging up your 'purchased' list for ever more, even if it's total ****. Randomly forcing an album into people's libraries is a marketing coup for U2, and a slap in the her face for the hoards of U2 haters. Personally, I deteste the smug tig bono. They created a rock hall of fame and put themselves in it - bunch of tommy tankers.

Eh? U2 had nothing to do with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was opened in 1983 and U2 were only on their third album at that point and still playing small venues.

As annoyed as you are, I'm sure Apple are perfectly entitled to put whatever they want in your iTunes (not that they've done that on this time, mind). Maybe next time you update it you should read the Ts and Cs. They haven't forced the album into anyone's library though - it's just been made available for download on the cloud. There's now a one click tool to remove it if you're that upset about having it in your purchased list.

^ Apple Apologists - justifying ***** design decisions since i1976

I'm not an Apple apologist and my lifetime involvement with Apple extends to buying an iPod 9 years ago and nothing since. Downloading the U2 album is the first time I've used in iTunes in YEARS. I used to be one of those tedious people that would decry everything Apple did until I got a life and realised that irrationally hating things was a huge waste of time. Maybe you'll come to that conclusion one day.

No-one is forcing you to listen to the album and the furore around the distribution method is massively overblown. It's no different to any other free album download, no-one is forcing you to download it and no-one is forcing you to listen to it. It's there if you want it, and if having it in your purchased list (who gives a ****) offends you that much then you can remove it. Apple probably know a hell of a lot more about you than you would care to share anyway so a free album is really the least of your worries.

Furthermore, as much as I like U2, I understand there are perfectly valid reasons why others don't. I'm not going to try and convince people otherwise. It does bother me when people just spout rubbish as facts and don't expect to be pulled up on it though.

I didn't understand why everyone was so mad at receiving this album, but then I realised if I had received One Direction or something I'd probably throw my phone out of the window.

Wasn't the case to begin with, the only reason they added the tool was because so many people complained. Me included.

Actually, they did. For users who have 'automatically download purchases' enabled this will have suddenly appeared on their device, without requesting it, clicking anything to say they want it etc.

I personally think it was a massive **** up on Apple's part to do this, why couldn't they have just said 'If you want U2s new album you can go ahead and click to grab it for free up until x date' - not just assume everyone wants it.

If anything Apple creating the tool suggests they admit they dropped a nut, have to give them credit for giving the option to remove it mind.

I wasn't aware of that as I had to download it manually - in which case, agreed it was a poorly thought out move by both parties. I get the impression Apple/U2 are both pretty unaware of just how much some people dislike them. They either need to sack their PR people or pull their heads out of the sand. Both have more than enough fans and no need to foist themselves on people that don't want their devices or music.
