I recently bought a complete new build pc and built it myself, I have the Sapphire R9 290 tri-x OC card, It's installed and the fans are spinning and continue spinning while the computer is on but I can't find it in device manager?
All i see in device manager is the onboard graphics, I've tried changing the card to another PCI slot but its the same issue. Can't update the driver on it as it can't be found.
I've just bought an external dvd drive and tried to run the graphics driver but they fail to install as it can't see a graphics card. On my graphics card it has a 8pin slot and a 6pin slot, these are the two cables that came with the graphics card http://imgur.com/xUndKLq,r6U2m02

and I have 6+6pin plugged in as i don't have/know what connector fits the 8pin +6pin cable? this is the psu cable i have plugged in http://imgur.com/vL7HEXD

Please please HELP this is my first ever build and I'm unsure what to do next.
Pc Specs, All new parts:

windows 8.1 64bit
I5 4690K
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x OC Graphics card
Gigabyte Z97x-UD3H
2x4GB Team Vulcan gold pro 2133mhz Ram
EVGA supernova Gold 850w PSU
256gb SSD Mx100
2TB Seagate HDD

Edit: when i plug the 6+2pin and the 6pin into the graphics card and turn on the pc I get no display on my monitor, tried using my tele and using a hdmi and still no display either.

You need to connect the 8 pin and the 6 pin to the graphics card, this is how it draws the power.

Once you've connected them, you should be able to see it in device manager and install the drivers.

I have done that now but as soon as its connected it still doesn't show in device manager, if i restart the pc with it connected i get no display at all even when connected directly into the graphics card via Hdmi.

Disable the onboard GPU in the bios so there is no conflict.

Does it have to be disabled in bios? I disabled it in device manager, I get no display on my monitor when the graphics card is plugged in.

If i go to bios and disable the onboard graphics (not sure how to do this) then plug my graphics card back in i should be able to see it on the display?

Just to confirm you are plugging the HDMI into the graphics card and no the onboard? Silly question I know but possible easy mistake to make.

You will find an option in the BIOS in one of the tabs for onboard video, disable it and possibly there is another setting for graphics boot device, disabling onboard should do enough but just set this to PCI-E 1 or whatever the first slot is labelled as.

Lastly try a different HDMI cable and make sure it is plugged in. My Tri-X 290 required a 'custom' HDMI cable (read as: with one side hacked off with a stanley knife) as the HDMI slow was so close to the metal of the case separating the slots it wouldn't plug in properley without modification.

Should you disable the onboard graphics and have no display at all, you can reset the CMOS jumper (in your motherboard manual) which will reset the bios to default and enable the onboard graphics again.

Good luck.

i've got it sorted now, turns out for some reason using my monitor and HDMI cable from the Tele it wouldn't work. Took the computer to my mates who plugged his monitor in and it worked fine, I ended up using a VGA-HDMI connection and it now works fine, 300fps on CS:GO :D
