Fuel theft!

Wire in a seperate circuit from the fuel gauge sender that when fuel drops below a given point it ignites an incendiary device.

You just have to remember to keep the car above 1/4 full. And tell anyone you lend the car to.

That'll teach those roustabouts.

I don't follow the logic here

It would make the problem less costly to fix, but surely has no effect on the crime being committed in the first place.

'I better not steal that fuel, they've got a tank which can be easily resealed.'

No the tank has a layer or lining which reseals itself to prevent fuel loss.

Could discourage the practise of drilling a tank if all the thief ends up with is half a cup of petrol for his efforts.

Like i say it would add to the price of a car but with a tank of fuel costing £60 and the repair bill > £200 it may become feasible on higher model ranges.

Still don't see the point in this. It's made for specific scenario where the tank gets ruptured by a projectile. To circumvent it all you need to do is drill a hole and put a tube in it.

Camp out on your porch with a shotgun on a rocking chair wearing a wife beater and cans of beer.

They won't come back to do your street again, they'll move on to another street.

This happened to all the off road cars at my mums, so I knocked a plate of stainless steel attached to the under body mounting points via security screws, woke up in the morning to find a large pile of burnt out drill bits.:D
Made a load of similar plates for my neighbors and had no fuel theft since then.

Really?...

I use HSS bits every day and they'd make short work of any Mickey Mouse protective plate.

Get a decent aftermarket car alarm, it should have proximity on it for when people are hanging about near the vehicle but I doubt it'll "see" through the chassis though. Stick a camera on your house looking at the car.

To be fair, stainless steel is pretty damn hard and in the dark with a battery drill at a dodgy angle it would be difficult enough for them to pack it in and move on to an easier target.

Were they drilling with chocolate?

*Edit*
I have a fix!!!!

Lower your car so it looks absolutely stupid and impractical, they can't get a jack or drill under it!

how the hell can you afford running a car (tax, insurance etc)?

by not paying for your fuel !

tax and insurance can be pennies compared to fuel if your doing decent amounts of miles

work out how much you spend on fuel in a year. work out what else you could spend the cash on if all your fuel was stolen for free !

Convert to LPG. Seeing the aftermath of them drilling that would be amusing if nothing else.
Or become one of those who only fill up £10 at a time.
Or just wait until the local gypsy camp have moved on and get on with life :p

Sorry should have said the stainless was industrial fabrication quality normally about 1mm/3mm thick and is usually drilled with a oil/water cooling stream on a pillar drill, so a hand drill will never punch through it.

This stuff is designed to take impact, molten iron/steel and any thing else chucked at it. makes it a right pain in the arse to cut.

or make the hole bigger. stick a 7/16 th dril lbit through it an it aint sealing back up

Some scummy low life has drilled into and stole petrol from 5 cars on my road. Including my car, my wife's, and my father in laws car. Now the problem is we now all have to pay to have a new fuel tank fitted plus labour.

Now my question is how can I prevent this from happening in the future? Is there like a metal shield I can buy to put over my fuel tank? Or some sort of fuel tank alarm that will alert me if my fuel tank is being drilled? I need something cheap but effective. A decent car alarm costs a fortune so that option is more than likely out.

Thanks
lower the car on coilovers

Ive drilled thru ~1mm with self tappers;). Stainless isnt that tough but i suppose it depends on the drill bit. Not sure if thieving scumbags use rocol or the like :D

EDIT: I am slightly confused tho, did they drill thru your fuel cap or from underneath thru the tank?

If I was stealing fuel I would be drilling from underneath, I'm kinda attached to my teeth.

Stick a fuel cell in your boot and refill tank with something nasty or simply petrol mixed with sugar.

Next time the culprit will reveal themselves.

:D

I can't think of anything more retarded than drilling into a full petrol tank... except maybe that guy who tried to angle grind a full petrol tank off while he was in a pit.
