I'm currently looking at 120/144hz and 240hz, but I'm not sure if there's a point in 240hz. While I was doing some reading on 120hz/144hz, I've come across G-Sync and lightboost which apparently give the same visual effect as the old good CRT monitors.

Now my pc is 3 years old, (spec listed below) even though I mainly play FPS games on low settings. Most of the time I get around 100fps on BF3 or 150-210fps in CS:GO and IMO there should be a noticeable difference going from 60hz.

My PC Spec:

i5 [email protected]
Asus P8Z68-V rev. B3
2x4gb 1600mhz 1.5v
HIS IceQ 7950 1050/1400

I don't have a budget for the monitor yet, as I need to find out whenever lightboost or G-Sync will be worth extra £££'s over normal 120/144hz monitor.

I went from a 60hz monitor to a 144hz at i51 and while I "think" there was a visible difference, going back made no difference what so ever.

Call it a placebo effect if you will - some may argue otherwise.

I don't see the point, but its up to you.

I did feel the difference while switching between old CRT (120hz) and normal LED (60hz) in CS 1.6. I want/need to buy a new monitor anyway, so I might just as well go for 120/144hz with G-sync and other staff. But if there's no difference in 2d view than for me its just a waste of money...

That's why I want to find out from forum members who have used both, if the difference is see-able or if its just a placebo effect.

Ok. From previous experience, buying for the future isn't a great idea. You cannot be 100% sure its going to work out the way you planned. Buy for now and then see how it stands.

A year is a very longtime when it comes to hardware and there is not guarantee g-sync will be around or worth it.

Get a 144hz monitor and wait!

By the sounds of this my 7950 already has/will have this sort of technology, wow this is impressing :D . But that article isn't very clear of the future plans that AMD has with the "FreeSync". I'll look through these comments when I have more time, this is interesting and I'm planing to order that monitor next week so will do more research during weekend.

Cheers for that :)

Freesync will only be compatible with the 29x series and the 285.

As for new monitor, I say wait till the end of the year, lots of stuff coming out.

Good point, Christmas sales are always great.

P.s. Isn't that I5 760 bottlenecking your 290? I can see sometimes my i5 [email protected] being a bottleneck for my 7950, which is slower by a fair bit compared to 290.

Yup, it most certainly is! :D

Only a few games where it is noticeable though i.e. crysis 3 and metro.

I was going to upgrade to DC i5 but seeing that mantle will be in most of the upcoming games (at least the ones I am interested in anyway), I am going to hold of. Mantle compared to DX in bf 4 is amazing, super smooth with very few FPS drops below 80 (capped the FPS), dx = fps drops galore so not much "need" to do anything just yet.

I will probably upgrade to i5 DC later in the year/early next year though...
