Disaster my CPU is dead!

Hi all,

I've been told that after a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD I might be looking at a CPU failure. It's early days yet but I am contemplating replacing a few things in my setup.

I currently have a Z77 board with ai5 3570k CPU and I am wondering if it would be worth moving to another MB maybe the Haswell lga1150.

I have a maximum budget of £300 but I would like to make as cheap as possible. I anticipate being able to sell the replacement CPU (3570k) for £100 of course it will be boxed so I should get a quick sale.

What board would you switch too, and what should I buy bearing in mind I have a R9 290 vapour-x, Samsung evo SSD and I might need new memory as I have also been getting memory management BSOD as well, I personally think the motherboard is borked but hey!

Doubt its CPU failure but based on the little information you have provided it could be that the memory controller on the CPU is struggling with the RAM - how much and what kind of RAM is on there?

Samsung Magician does some bad things with DX which atleast on nVidia doesn't cause crashes but can cause issues with programs unable to go into or dropping out of fullscreen/exclusive mode its possible its causing issues with the AMD drivers resulting a BSOD. If possible disable the UI part of it from running and/or remove it from startup (don't need to uninstall it and its background processes like rapid mode helper are fine but its own helper process/front end can cause problems).

From that thread it looks like you could at the very least even if its not the main problem be falling foul of a long standing bug in regards to hardware acceleration of 2D surfaces i.e. in browsers - disabling hardware acceleration in your web browser may help.

Memory management BSODs are most often cased by either failing/faulty RAM, incorrect RAM settings or the IMC on the CPU being unable to cope with the current RAM settings - sometimes its enough just to bump the IMC/VTT voltages 1-2 notches or whatever they are called on your board.

I have removed Samsung magician completely, I have only had one BSOD (memory management) this morning pc is running fine.

It's funny you should #mention browsers because it always happens when I am using browsers, I have checked the internet explorer acceleration and it is disabled but it does seem to happen when I am using a browser or maybe have a quite a few windows open, never when I am playing games. Alsowhen I check the timings online for the ram it says 8-8-8-24 but the motherboard is running it at 9-9-9-24 although it is set to turbo by default

So in respect of the voltages if I push them up by two it might resolve the issue?

I started getting a lot of BSODs when browsing watching flash/youtube videos and it is to do with AMD's newer drivers.

Try rolling back to maybe 13.9. I'm on 14.4 and still get the odd issue but its mostly ok but someone said 13.9 were rock solid. Pain if your playing the latest games though.

I was just the same as you thinking it was all sorts of stuff.

Can't hurt to try.

memory management errors are usually not enough dram voltage and or imc (vtt voltage)

if raising those don't cure it then test ram with memtest86 as one or more sticks could be faulty

Sorry I wont do that again, thanks for the advice

I am currently using a gigabyte z77 dsh

Where is the best place to get the safe voltage info checked gigabyte and all I can find is the compatibility sheets

have you enabled x.m.p memory profile 1 in the bios? try that and try raising cpu/vtt to 1.08v

latest motherboard bios might help with stability also so flash to latest one with qflash

I can't change vtt voltage its set to auto and won't let me change it? It's set to 1.060v at the moment

changed the profile and the memory is running at 1600mhz as it should do (always ran at 1333MHz) from what I can remember the last time I tried to get it to run at 1600(not through bios) it BS regularly and it running fine maybe this could have been the issue, I'll report back and ley you know if this is not the case.

Thank you all for your help you may just have saved my £300 to spend on impulsive upgrades.....lol!

pretty sure it should let you alter vtt

just see how it is over next few days

The option is highlighted but when I select it it does nothing, clicked it with the mouse too nothing.

I will try it in the morning with some basic browsing, as strange as it sounds most of the BSOD happen in the morning between 9-12 pm.

I will post if there are any more problems.

Once again thank you all.
