I know it's not worth it, not really.
But, seeing the 970 and 980 I have that itch that we all get.

So, who is upgrading from a 780 and why?

I am.. Had a ref. 780, sold it just before the launch of the new cards, while having a backup 760 laying around, i will now get a 970. The price i got for my 780 will make up 90% of what a new 970 costs.

I would wait.

What is there the 780 can't currently do? Unless you are at 4k, but then a single 970/980 won't help you there either. Time goes really quickly, it will be 2015 before you know it, and by which time the 980ti will be out. This time next year it might well be Maxwell on 20nm and that will be mega.

Had a 780, would hardly overclock, bought an MSI GTX 970 which I've just installed. Providing it gets anywhere near 1500/8000 overclocks most are getting it will beat my 780 which is going to a mate for cheap to help him out.

Yes...and mega expensive! I am of the mind that there is no point waiting for something that i will not be able to afford anyway ( or at least not WANT to afford due to the price/performance ratio being rubbish)

i still think the best set up is 970 sli at the moment. you can get 2x970's for under £520. The Titan II will be silly price and the 980Ti/1080Ti is going to be at least £550 or more. Yet neither will come close to 970 sli performance.

Yeah fair enough, but upgrading from a 780 to a 970/80 is largely pointless, unless you get a pair.

I get that itch all the time, when new tech comes along :)

To be honest, if I was tight on money, I wouldn't bother upgrading,

BUT...

I'm not, so I probably will :)

I'm thinking of selling my 780 Lightning, and buying 2 x Asus Strix 970's.

Just need to make my mind up, if I want to go SLI or not.

Decisions, descisions....

I would keep it or go 780 sli
If it still plays all your games, why change.
I just got 2 780 and not bothered about this 970/980.
I'm waiting for the full maxwell, then i will buy.

The thing is, if I buy another 780 Lightning for SLI, then
that would cost £400.00, but part of me feels this might be better spent
going towards 2 x 970's or 1 x 980 ?

Who says men don't have hard decisions to make in life....lol

Got the itch too. One 980 to start with, but tbh I'm not finding any limits with 780 sli even ar stock speed.

If you're currently on an i7-920 wouldn't the money be better spent upgrading to Z97/4970k? Would probably double your CPU performance for less than what 980 will cost!

Holding with my 780 (helps its a good clocker - probably stock 980 performance with my every day clock though I'd have to check). If the rumours are right I'm gonna stick with the 780 til early next year (not one to buy and sell for short term changes).
