So am i right in right in thinking I have a dead PCIE slot

One GPU. It advices to put GPU in slot 2 since its 16x. Doesnt work. So I tried it in another PCIe slot which is 8x. It works

I was hoping that I didnt spot somthing in the bios but if it works in one PCIe slot and not the other one, surely that means a dead PCIe slot.

The GPU is a R9 290
It doesnt even recognises the graphic card in the 16x slot

Any advice?

I was reading this on the msi site

"The Z97 XPOWER AC comes with a PLX-chip to enable 4-Way SLI / CrossFire. However, in the case you only use just one VGA card, the PLX chip may cause some latency. This is why the Z97 XPOWER AC comes with a dedicated PCI-E x16 slot which is directly connected to the CPU bypassing the PLX chip giving you the best possible performance when using only 1 VGA card."

Maybe its worth disabling the integrated graphic card?

I dont think disabling the integrated gfx is going to help but you can try it.

Try updating the BIOS.

Is there any dirt or crud in the slot?

Are there any bent cpu socket pins?

is the heatsink over tightened causing the board to bend and contact between pins and pad to stop?

Slot layout on this board is dumb to say the least...

1 = 3
2 = 1
3 = 2
5 = 5
7 = 7

I have my 780's in physical slots 1 & 5, yet slot 5 defaults to the master slot of the pair. Using a single card try physical slot 2 (which is lane 1) and force pci to gen3 in bios.

Make sure the ceasefire switch for that slot is set correctly, update to latest bios, 1.0 & 1.1 both have pci issues

Can you try the card in other slots? I've never had issues getting a card to work on the board, more issues identifying what is plugged in where :p

wow the plot thickens

So I put the GPU in the the lanes (3 4) I get a picture via GPU but after the Bios screen, its just a _ at the top of the screen and nothing else ( the bios screen im referring to is the screen that gives you the option of going into the bios or changing boot options

I put the card in lane one where I know it works and works like a charm. I can get to the desktop
