I have the 780 but now I have that itch

I modded the BIOS of my Gigabyte Windforce card and with 1.212v it was 1.3Ghz and it flew.

It was cooled by an Arctic Cooling Hybrid and temps were awesome on it.

I'm not so much interested in getting super performance as much as i am in reducing power/noise/heat while still having a fast system; a move to 980 would beat my 780 while doing all 3. Not in any hurry so i'll see how it affects the price crash on 2nd hand 780s.

The money you'll lose selling your 780 and moving to a 980 will negate any saving you'll make on your electricity bill.

You won't see a difference moving from 780 to a 980 unless you're running benchmarks 24/7. If you're gaming, stick with your card and grab a second one if you feel you're low on horsepower.
I modded my bios and it felt like getting a new card! And it's easy and doesn't take long xx

I am still going back and forth on it. I just got my 780 Classy the other day. So I was going to see what it could do before I make a final decision.

Unfortunately my Classy only has 68% ASIC quality. So it runs hotter and clocks lower.

So far best I can seem to do for gaming is 1280/1702. Which is at around 1.25v. Which is more than I thought it would do considering the low ASIC quality.

I will be using the EVGA step up if I do decide to go with the 980. Might try and hold off as long as possible to see if any better versions come out first. :D

Classy 980 is 2nd from top

Your looking to step up to this?

I am still considering posibilities.
But I like the vram increase with 970.
I would be selling my 780s with blocks too, so I guess I'll get good enough price for 2.

It will most likely be a stock version or a SC. I don't think they ever have Classies available in the step up program unfortunately. :(

If the Classy was available it would make my decision much easier. :D

Yeah reference only for step up. I used step up to go from a 780 classy to a ref 780 ti.

Thats a bit annoying i could understand it if you went from ref to ref but i assumed if you had a classy you could step upto another classy, Oh well still better than other vendor i guess.

Thanks for info :)

My msi gaming 780gtx reads 67.3% ASIC quality, i assumed that was about average.

This is my 4th Classy. My last 3 which were all faulty was around 78%.

Both my 770s were around 78% and so was my Sapphire 290.

So I think anything below that is below average.

What would you guys define as a poor clocking 780? One of mine will do 1202/3505. The other, 1189/3305.

Around 75% is average.

My 780 was only 67% and was a poor clocker.

Yeah so far mine seems stable at 1280/1702. Which is a lot better than I expected when I first checked my ASIC quality.

This card would probably be really nice for somebody that could put it under water.

It benches at 1300/1800 but is limited by heat. I'm just glad it seems to be working.

Was not a very good experience going to EVGA for the first time. :D

So, who is upgrading from a 780 and why?

I'm only changing my 780 for a 970 as I bought it a few days ago without knowing the 970/980 cards were getting released so soon! The 780 was also bought as a replacement for a dodgy R9 290. I just need to decide which GTX 970 to get now, but i'm leaning towards the Palit card as the cooler type is good if I go for SLI :).

Gaming benchmark results show quite a gap between the GTX 780 and 980. It would be interesting to see how the new cards handle PhysX with fewer cores than the previous gen though... Has anyone actually looked in to this?

Anything that doesn't hit atleast 1100 is a poor clocker IMO, 1189 gets you to stock 780ti performance numbers in most benchmarks IIRC.
