I've been waiting a long time to upgrade now, current PC looking a bit ugly with triple rad hanging at back of the case and the pump is noisy. So will probably scrap it and change for a NHD15 i assume is best for silence & performance?

Anyway this year i added some new stuff to my old computer, ram, cpu, ssd and got a new gpu coming. I think maybe it's time to get a new case and upgrade the main stuff. Question is should i go for x99 with some of the cheaper ram like the crucial 2400mhz? Or go to z97 and use the ram i currently have?

PSU is almost 6 years old now as well so not sure it'd be wise to transfer it with newer stuff. Or i can try and hold on with current stuff until Skylake, but if it's only a small % boost there is little point doing it.. I think my current board may be having issues though, my usb webcam only gets detected if i unplug it and plug it back in again when i power it up.

Obviously z97 would be cheaper by a fair bit because i wouldn't have to buy new ram.. Just not sure what to go for.

I like the look of the new Corsair 780t case though so at least i can decide on one thing :D

I could go for x99 and a 5820k but the ram prices are putting me off a little bit.

if you are gaming and browsing and a bit of photo editing etc go for Z97 with an i5 or if you can afford it an i7

for everything else, i.e. heavy video editing, extreme 4k gaming, server detailing and all other heavy tasks go for X99 as the quad channel ddr4 memory will help, minus it being expensive and the haswell E processors are very very very very very fast, but you will need a very good water cooler for it

What do you use your PC for is an important factor.

Mainly gaming, browsing, some video editing here and there.

z97 probably would make it easier to go with dual gpu's because of lower cost though.. hmm

But if i change over to either, should i use my current power supply? I've no clue how long they should last or if they get a lot weaker over some time.

Is there much difference in performance with ram speeds of ddr4 or is it similar to ddr3 where it only makes a small difference?

If the ram prices are putting you off then just buy two sticks, quad channel is an option not a requirement, it won't make any noticeable difference to gaming anyway and you can always buy more later.

Not much choices though from what i can see but it's a good idea, would the crucial ballistix sport 2400mhz be much good? It's CL16.

This list look ok for the money?

Asus X99-S - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle

SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - White (overkill? Or try to use my current old 750w psu?)

Corsair Graphite 780T Full Tower Case - White (CC-9011059-WW)

And of course 2x 4gb of the Crucial Ballistix Sport 2400mhz ddr4.. which is out of stock, like most other cheaper kits.

1000w is probably overkill, what GPU have you got coming?

Buy a better, faster, in stock DDR4 and sell half of it.

See how your PSU gets on, then use the sold DDR4 money to replace it, if you want to at the time.

I don't understand the advice here, for OP's needs X99 is overkill and pointless.

Why would you buy RAM and then sell half of it at a loss, why not just get Z97 and save that hassle?

@OP what is your budget?

Well i got my 970 gpu delivered today, i can go about 1,000 more.. So i could afford x99, but saving money on a new build is always a good thing. Main thing is though how much cheaper would z97 come to compared to x99? Around £200-300 or so? Hmm.

To be honest i can afford x99 and a 2nd 970 card but i don't want to go blowing all the cash that i saved for a while. So i set that limit of 1,000 now.

I'll go looking at some z97 boards and cpu's to compare prices for a bit i think.. Maybe will help me decide.

I did find somewhere selling 2x 4gb of ddr4 for almost half price of a 16gb kit which is reasonable. Makes the difference between z97 and x99 about £180 that way between board, cpu and ram.

May do that then and get it over with, don't need another gpu for a little while anyway. Will reuse my psu but have to sell the ram i have now.

They're not even using quad core properly yet, it will be many years, decent CPU and a power horse of a GPU is what you need.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£43 Saving** £351.98
1 x Corsair Graphite 780T Full Tower Case - Black (CC-9011063-WW) £139.99
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 850W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £109.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060009-WW) £78.98
Total : £697.45 (includes shipping : £13.75).

This would be ideal for a dual GPU setup with a tasty overclock on the CPU.
