I'm starting a job in London so am looking to sell my car , commute by train and just use the wifes car as needed.

Has anyone got any experience of cancelling their insurance, and then using their NCB later on? I have heard different opinions that some insurance companies will accept up to 3 years old NCB, other not accepting anything.

I will be cancelling only a couple of months into the year so guess I will have to rely on my old insurance which would mean 10 years NCB so it is worth keeping if I can...

I think you have 12 months before the NCB expires - though I'm not sure if it's all of the NCB or just some of it.

You can still ask for a proof of NCB from the current insurance company you are cancelling with, I did this recently with insurance I cancelled half way through.

As for how long this lasts, I'm not sure if there is a statutory minimum or if every insurance company treats it differently.

Pretty sure it is 2 years you get.

Should be enough for you and your wife to alternate the policy holder every year though, thus keeping both sets of NCD valid indefinitely. It may not always work out the cheapest, but if the discounts are similar sizes, then the premiums will likely be close enough (I was about £40 difference this year between myself and the wife).

Why couldn't you be a named driver and maintain it that way on the same policy? I realise some insurers don't do this, but I thought some did?
