Any more ideas for my new motor?

Fair enough (but don't call yourself a petrolhead if you are putting 'amount of petrol money I will get' and 'premium feel' as key criteria :p)

Where did I mention petrol money?
I may be 19 but I work in a finance company... :p
I'm also not buying until next year, and not until I am absolutely sure that I am in good financial stead, and in a solid job.

As long as I can get 25MPG+ I'm not too fussed because I only drive about 8K per year. :)

And am I not allowed to have a premium feel?
Are the BMW chaps not petrolheads either because they fuss over their interior trim and refurbish their leather every 5 minutes? You should tell them... :D

I meant taxi money, which you mentioned earlier :)

Premium feel is great, but what I'm saying is that by including that criteria on a £5k budget you're excluding a lot of the good driver's cars within your price range.

I bet ShaneStatham told himself the samething.

Any I say Astra VXR. You'll be 20. Not 45. Its okay to look at bit barry!

Oh sorry, I'm so used to people accusing me of sponging off of my parents, or being 12 years old, that I just assumed it was more of the same. :p

And I understand what you mean now, yeah. Sorry, I should be a little more clear I think... Premium feel is preferable, but I would be happy with an interior like in the Civic or the Mazda, which are reasonable. What I don't want is a damn awful interior, like in a Renault. :)

Who? :p

And I said that about the Astra VXR myself, suggesting that I myself think it is a bit too barry. I used to drive my Polo with coilovers and BBS alloys... If I think something looks barry, then it must look really barry. :D

With regards to the RX-8, you should actually find them very cheap to insure, not sure why, but for some reason they are. That's not to say you should get one however - if you're looking at A3s and suchlike, I assume you're looking for something decent you can use day to day, and I'm not sure an RX-8 falls into that category. :p

Out of your list, I'd choose a Focus ST or Mazda 3 MPS - the MPS is ridiculously fast for what it is, and my old Mazda 3 was a great car. Although as you want some practicality, I'd go the whole hog and look at bigger cars such as an ST220 or Mazda 6 MPS - if you can insure a Focus ST, you shouldn't have any trouble insuring those.

The ST is £1600 to insure, which is a little outside of what I want to spend. But I might test drive one to see if I love it enough... :p

By comparision, the A3 is £1200 to insure, and the Polo 1.2 I currently drive is £800 to insure.

When I get home I'll run quotes for all of the cars in the OP and put the insurance prices next to them, and colour the stupidly expensive ones in red.

I really don't think £5k will buy you a 2.0t a3 that you'll actually want - I know you've seen one but I doubt its a decent example at that kind of money.

Same goes for almost all of your list tbh, with the exceptions of the e46 compact (bleugh, also they're a £2k car) or the ep3.

I'd honestly have a 3.2 a3 if you can get the insurance down

how about.. an ALFA GT.. cos its alfa.. and probably what id get :D

I sort of looked at Alfas, but they are priced so low for the age that I got scared about all the possible reasons for it... :p

Are they as unreliable as they used to be? Don't they use GM engines in some of their cars now? The 3.2 V6 in the newer Alfas is out of a Vauxhall Signum I think... Horrible sounding engine. Barely sounds more interesting than the triple in my Slowlo...

The 147gta is a great little car, but also miles outside of where you are money wise.

They aren't unreliable but they are put together stupidly which makes repair/replacement expensive

RX8... Cheap to insure lol. Na mate. I paid a bag of money to have mine insured.

I ran an insurance quote on one as a first car at 18 and it came back at 2.5k or something (only checked for the luls). I haven't a clue how I did it. Just to expand on what I said I did then run another couple and didn't get the same results.

Yeah but you haven't actually looked at any of those 2.0t examples, think you'd be surprised at how rough they were.

Maybe not I guess, but you need to check

I know I need to check, and I will do in due course. :) They are 10 year old cars now remember. Those ones.
Do those A3's handle well, they are not sporty models other than a bit of grunt. Wife had an 05 A3, granted a diesel, handled like a boat. :)

I imagine that an A3 2.0T Quattro would be quite fun on the B-roads around here. This is why I want to test drive it of course, in case I am wrong. Diesel engines are also typically heavier are they not? Was it a FWD? You also have to remember that I think the handling of my 12 year old base model Polo with worn out shocks and brand new tyres is great, so my benchmark is a bit lower than yours I imagine. :p
