Ridley Scott Directing new Blade Runner film

I think the other problem with a Prequel or Sequel is as to what the film could actually be about other than another Bladerunner retiring Replicants.

Did anyone else play the PC Adventure game from 1997?
That demonstrated how the world of Bladerunner could be further expanded and introduced new characters. However ultimately, that was still just about a Bladerunner retiring a similar group of Replicants.

How can they do something new without going over old ground?
I'm sure you could just do another film about the same sort of story, given how many big actions sequels (looking at your Transformers) do the same thing. But I wouldn't have thought that would have been the kind of thing that Scott would have got involved with.

there was a couple of sequels to blade runner but they were novels. I will wait to see how Prometheus turns out to decide if this could be any good or not. I read an article on Dark Horizons which said Scott "sees an opportunity to create something that’s wholly original from the first 'Blade Runner".
I still cant believe the first one came out in 1982.The special effects are amazing

Wasn't this based on a book? I Dream of Electric Sheep and as far as im aware it doesnt have a sequel. So im not expecting anything great from this.

Sadly it does, Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human. It's utter ****e!

If they are dead set on making a new Blade Runner movie, then personally I'd like to see Roy Batty's 'life' that led to 'that' soliloquy.

Do we actually have a good example of cinematic work re-visited by original director several decades later for continuation than lived up to expectations and didn't destroy original legend/story in the process? All I can think of are wrecking balls smashing original legends to pieces like Star Wars, Indy, Alien/Prometheus etc...

I'm not sure what to think.

Blade Runner is one of my favourite films and (imho) one of the very best films ever made (if there were such a thing as a 'best film ever'), so I have mixed feelings about anything that could damage the films legacy and reputation.

Not impressed with the idea of another Blade Runner movie, but I do love Blade Runner.

It's not even a double dip for me, I've got VHS, Laserdisc, DVD's, HD-DVD's and Blu Rays of it. Multiple versions on each too.

*hangs head in shame*

Is this gonna be a Prometheus screw up too?
That movie ruined the mystery of the Aliens for me. Till that movie, the Aliens origins were up for grabs with all manner of theories.

We don't need the whole universe explained. I think we all like filling in the gaps ourselves.

Leave it alone old fella.

Now, a Tv series of the Blade runner universe would be preferable and possibly far better?

Radio 4 did a version of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? as part of a sci-fi week , fairly recently and it was made and acted/read really well. If its still on the BBC site its well worth a listen.

Leave it alone +1 here. I was saddened to hear about a new Blade Runner flick. Then again I was one of those who thought that Prometheus wasn't too bad. Cinamatography was excellent and the general idea of the film was good too, just, well plotholes everywhere!

One of the reasons I love BR is the intro. The synths, flying over the city, flames bursting into the sky, it creates a great atmosphere. Dark, ominous, futuristic. Good story, great performances.
Iconic intro for sure. Hell even Westwood got it right when they did the PC game when everyone thought it couldn't be done.

This makes me sad. What Spielberg and Lucas did to Indiana Jones, what Lucas did to Star Wars with the prequels and his constant meddling and what Scott and Lindelof did by showing us the 'jockey' species and the Alien origin, is now going to happen to Deckard and co. In other words, fond memories will be molested.

Prometheus wasn't a bad film, but knowing what the 'jockey' species is and looks like, kind of ruins the mystery when watching Alien. Despite umpteen viewings of it, the 'jockey' remained a mystery, and that added to the film. Still a fantastic film, but the experience when watching it, won't be what it was, pre Prometheus.

Lucas molested Star Wars, and Spielberg and he did a good job of molesting a great film franchise by making The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

These directors seem compelled to trash their great work. :(

yeah, I liked Prometheus (OMG controversy :p)

I think i may have changed my mind about a BR2 - im not sure it needs to be done, Blade Runner is incredible as it is and I just cant think how you could add anything worthwhile to it, the ambiguous ending is what makes the film, taking the story further would take something away from that

please prove me wrong RS

I cant help but feel Scott is falling for his own hype with this, whats he going to do for two hours, tease us with the reveal of whether Deckard is a replicant or not? i dont give a ****, give me a good story instead and keep Lindeloff a million miles away from it!

Blade Runner it still my favourite film. There has been rumour of another film for years and Scott said "We'll get around to it eventually" a year or so ago in an interview in Empire magazine.
I'll wait and see - as I always do with films, hopefully they can get a good story and script - then the job is half done.

Why bother rehashing an old film that will never really work because the actors have moved on and there was never meant to be a follow-up?

If you think you can make that work, why not go for a new IP? Make a Takeshi Kovacs or Black Man movie instead. There must be a thousand other source materials that would be better than ruining a classic film of its time while adding nothing to the original.

Doubt you'd see James Cameron doing this kind of thing. He knows to leave his classics well alone.
Shame that he and Ridley missed their opportunity to work together on a proper Aliens sequel with Sigourney though...
