i5 750 to Devils Canyon

Just thought is there an AMD CPU I could go for that would help with multi core games? Could get AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8370 and a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX for £250. Worth it?

i went from a i5 [email protected] to a FX [email protected] and im very happy with it, i must admit though, in older games there seems to be no difference at all, but in newer titles like ALXandy says, all 8 cores do get used, but for me a lot of games im looking at are going to be using mantle so CPU is not really a problem here.

i still have my i5 760 and mobo as a back-up :D

yeh much better, BF4 and coh2 was night and day (i play these the most)

but things like skyrim and coh1 was just the same, i cant remember if i was using a 6990 or 7990 while i was doing the upgrade.

atm im using my fx 8320 with a msi r9 290 and its amazing :)
the other thing is the FX chips are so cheap, so what you could do it buy a chip and mobo, try it and if you dont feel like it was worth it, DSR and get a new nvidia gpu?

Wow night and day! That's made me really consider getting one. What cooler are you using on yours? I've already bought a GTX970 love it loads! It's just that in BF4 I only saw a increase of 3 FPS average over my GTX680 hence me looking for a Better CPU as BF4 is more CPU intensive. I believe newer games are going to benefit from multi core CPUs and that's when my 4 core i5 750 will begin to show its age. I'm searching the Internet for more results before I take the plunge.

And if I do is that Gigabyte motherboard I linked to good?

if i had the money i would got for the i7 4790k over the AMD FX, i could not afford to get a i7 setup at the time so i went with the AMD instead.
im using a corsair h80i, and tbh, i wish the FX was cooler as i cannot overclock any more due to heat issues.

if i was upgrading from my i5 760 now and had the money, i would go with the i7 you linked earlier, UK RMA with gigabyte

that way you get good performance in every game and not just the new games ;)
i dont play old games anyway so its not a problem for me :)

I see what your saying but the i7 path is double the money bit not for double the performance. I'm trying to find a correct balance between upgrading value and performance.

are you going to be using two GPU's? if so the i7 is better here as well, but then again what res are you playing at? higher the res the less important the CPU is.

if you dont want to spend i7 money but still play older games, then it i5 is the best choice, but you have got to ask yourself if the new i5 is worth the money over your current i5.

imho i have not played a game with my FX 8320 that struggles with anything, yes the i7 will be better but look at the price difference, one downfall for the AMD is you have to get a high end motherboard to overclock due to power phases, im using the ASUS crosshair v formula-Z to remove this problem completely

but again, most games i want to play are either mantle ready, or multi threaded.

for the same motherboard as me and the new version of the FX 8320 it is £276

of course you can get a cheaper board than the ASUS but i dont know which boards to avoid so i just added the best you can get lol

im using a asus ROG board, best board i have owned, but the asus RMA from what i have seen is really bad

tbh that asus board looks better ;)

Money never came :( So I'm still trying to scratch that upgrade itch!

Got a chance to get a cheap i7 870. If I can clock it to 4Ghz I think it's worth it as I plan to start gaming at 1440 and get another GTX 970.
