Road Cycling Essentials

I purchased some Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded tyres a couple of years ago. I used them for two days the winter before last, and they've sat in the garage since. They worked just fine on the two days it was icy enough to warrant their use, but I honestly wouldn't bother buying them again.

Also, as it's pay day, I decided to treat myself to a rare Rapha purchase. I ordered a long sleeve jersey in orange, and a merino base layer in black. Looking forward to getting them next week :)

That Whyte Suffolk is a seriously nice bike.

Yup. A friend just got one and it's really really nice. I tried to convince him to swap but strangely enough he said no :p

Only problem being then would be I have to join and go to a gym.

I was trying to find things I could do at home and fit in around everything else or easily if I was working away.

Fair enough. You could add body weight squats and pistol (single leg) squats to your routine then :) Or buy some weights to avoid having to go to the gym.

 I'm pretty surprised that it claims to be such a good commuter then..

Once I zip-tied a read mudguard to it it has been a decent enough one for the last 8 months. The single-most wanted thing for me from an upgraded bike is mudguard mounts though :/

Yeah it's not an acceptable compromise for a bike that sells itself as a commuter for me. I am seriously tempted by the Suffolk for a winter/commuter.

Both absolutely excellent items, I think you'll love the base layer especially; so comfortable and excellent at what it does.

It's great from what I've seen but one thing you'll need to make sure you read up on is setting up the HyRds. Nearly all bike shops do it wrong (as the brakes are kind of unusual to set up).

Even if I don't get this job, I may buy it anyway as a leisure bike.

Sounds stupid, but how do you all get your work clothes to work? Plan for me would be to drop it all off on a Sunday and the cycle in sports clothing. Think I need to get some gel shorts and other cycling stuff. Any reccomendations of minimum I should be looking at? Including helmet and a half decent helmet cam.

I commute with a back pack. It's a damn sight better now my commute isn't 15 miles :p.

Though the best compromise would be a decent commuter with panniers.

I spent my evening doing this...

The winter bike is ready!! Albeit crank and gear setup as I don't have a BB30 tool and don't fancy bashing it about with a hammer and wood...

Arrr you need a BB30 press?! I have a HHP3 BB press. I bought for my new bike build but have used it on other occasions with a few bikes for friends. Good bit of kit but a bit pricey for what it is. I got good deal on it though... managed to get it through amazon and used a gift voucher I had lying around for a while.

quite like that.. but I'll stick with a road bike ;)

you still need to beat me on cockblaster.. you won't be able to do it on this :D

I happen to already have one of the base layers already, it was given to me as a leaving gift from my last job. I quite often wear it on it's own as a t-shirt, as it doesn't look too "cycle specific". As for the jersey, I have been looking for an orange long sleeved one for a long time, so when the Rapha newsletter came out with an advertisement for it, I knew I would end up buying it sooner or later. They have an offer on where you get a merino base layer for £20 with any jersey, so I figured I might as well take advantage of it.

I bring my work clothes with me each day in a backpack, and I leave my shoes at work. We have showers in the office, so I cycle in wearing proper cycling gear, have a shower and get changed into my work clothes. By the time I go home ten hours later, my cycling gear has dried out, so it works well for me.

Everyone's different, I wear 1 pair of trousers a week so one day a week I swap them for clean, same with a towel I leave at work. Shoes, belt and tie are left at work so all I carry 'new' each day are shirt, socks and underwear.

I use a backpack and usually carrying wet weather gear in it (waterproof coat & trousers) along with my lunch etc. Although now it's cooler in the mornings I'm wearing my coat for wind protection and carrying overshoes... Also carrying shorts for the journey home, so that means carrying full length bibs home. Currently wearing base layer, normal jersey and coat in the mornings! Even wore my full gloves and neck gaiter this morning! :O

Yeah, I do! I'm getting my road bike back tonight, I had lent it to my friend for a triathlon so haven't been in the saddle for a while, I think my butt is thanking me as that carbon fibre thong can get a little uncomfortable!

Hmm. To be honest, I doubt it'll happen often. My concern is that the only other transport option I would have is a RWD car.

Saying that, I could walk 5 miles in just over an hour and I have suitable footwear.

I've got an E46 330ci sport and it's hopeless in the snow. A spike-tyred bicycle is MUCH better

The base layer is superb! Paired with a winter collar, they are so warm and comfortable.

Not sure how much the plank will help, I can plank for about 3 minutes but still get lower back pain, it's getting to the point ill need to see someone about it because it's now hurting when I'm not even riding. :-(

Maybe yoga or pilates might help?

Reminds me of the infamous plank thread... if you can plank for 3 minutes you're doing it wrong.

My comfort on the bike has improved noticeably since I started doing Stronglifts 5x5 and some sort of weights routine based around big compound exercises would be my first suggestion. The next would be something like Tom Danielson's Core Advantage book but I feel my core strength improvements have been much quicker from Stronglifts than doing Core Advantage.
