Vram shocker@1080p-Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

There isn't much excuse these days for (actually) using half a dozen GB of texture data - unless its REALLY high res - between various texture compression systems available and texture streaming most games even on ultra shouldn't be using more than 1-2GB for texture data. (Unless your actually detailing stuff with full resolution textures with 2x or more the detail of anything out at the moment).

I mean here's a theory, say Nvidia release an 8gb 970, i bet it will come with around a £100 premium. The 970 is begging out to be used via sli, and adding that extra price for additional vram really isn't worth it. I would say, get 2 970x4gb and enjoy the performance. I doubt games are going to be massively impacted by that setup for some time.

It looks ok but it looks like something made using COD4 :S

EDIT: Also they made a rookie mistake (can't say I didn't do it myself) with tree placement - trees don't grow in the real world with trunks aligned from the surface they are growing on - they either grow straight up or towards the light :S

Mate look at this mess i have here, summer and autumn trees at the same time :D

Heh, reminds me of back when people used to remove the ram chips off faulty Xbox's and put them on working ones (the later Xbox's used higher capacity RAM than the originals so only filled half the spaces) to double the RAM.

Done it and on my old ATI 9500np and GT9600. Nothing too difficult if careful. :)
The point is to know what dimms to buy.

I think that was more to do with 670 a 680 which would not run that well on maxed out settings on newer games before it ran out if vram.

Multiple cards/longevity were always part of the discussions-obviously ignored.:p

4Gb 670 enabling higher textures than a much faster 780ti-ouch if true.

im confused? i'd call this future proofing the game, if its hefty to run on todays hardware then tomorrow it'll still look current enough with higher settings on tomorrows hardware.

tbh, i do kind of wish peeps would do this sort of thing, take skyrim for example would it not be bliss to have had some real high res textures [ie better than the already released hd texturepack] withoug having to have a ton of texture mods.

thats just an example, its no excuse for the game having poor performance at launch just because its "graphically intensive" [i can name a couple of old games that dont run well on todays hardware and dont look that good doing it either]
