Anjem Choudary arrested.

No of course not. Am I giving the impression I'm lumping all Muslims in with that prat?

O and I missed a possible reason;

The media have blown his words out of proportion.

Perhaps not THE answer, but I'm pretty sure that what I think is fairly close to the mark.
Sorry for being so vague, but I'd rather see what people come up with first.

Disliking an absolute ****** like him doesn't make you a racist.
You are right to wonder why someone like him is given so much airtime though.

To be honest I had entertained the idea that the media loved him as he probably helped a fair amount of traffic to their sites. However I don't think that would have prevented his arrest if anything it would have expedited his arrest.

I mean the conspiracy theorist in me says he is used to create a hatred of all Muslims in order to distract people from the real issues in this country.

No need to apologise as long as you say what you think :D.

I dunno if it goes as far as distracting people from the real issues etc, but yeah, repeatedly put this guy on the news and paint him as a general representative of Islam is basically a form of inciting hatred.

It's standard Daily Mail tactics and look how well it works for them with getting people to hate Muslims, immigrants, dogs and the unemployed etc etc...
Use cherry picked individuals to paint a distorted picture often enough and people eventually believe it's the general state of affairs.

Hmm if it was only the daily mail I would agree without hesitation. Admittedly he makes much less of an appearance in the guardian but to be on air on the bbc really surprised me. Channel 4 not so much as they're just a more picture heavy version DM :D.

It's the most likely explanation but I still wonder how he wasn't arrested long before this just on what he's tweeted/said in interviews and his clear links with proscribed organisations. it just seems somewhat one sided with this hate speech law.

Is magnolia broken? :D

When I say Daily Mail tactics, I'm not just talking about the articles they've produced.
I'm talking about pretty much any media platform the guy is given.

Before anyone posts their favorite tinfoil jpeg, I'm not suggesting that there's a mass conspiracy (although given how few organisations own our various media outlets, it's not totally beyond the realm of possibility).

Controversy sells too, so also consider that.

I have a feeling that he's of far more worth to us if he's free to go about his daily business than if he's locked up in a cell somewhere without free access to his buddies.
