Is it worth changing my HIS 7950 for a new GTX 970?

Hi All,

I am liking what I am hearing about the new 970's and I was wondering whether it was worth upgrading to one and replacing my 7950, my current specs are

i5-3570K @ 4.5ghz using a Noctua NHU12P
HIS 7950 IceQ Boost Clock 3GB @ 1100/1300 (on a 24" HP2475w)
Gigabyte Z77-D3H mobo
Samsung 120GB SSD
Patriot Viper (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9
Corsair TX 750w psu
Win 8.1

I don't need uber resolution just 1900x1200 as I have a HP LP2475w.

Thoughts?

So currently thinking the Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream. Reviews seem good, but not had one of this make before. Should I be aware, or perhaps wait for the MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition?

My self, id say get a 7950 2nd hand and crossfire like I did. they can be had now for 90 pounds or so, so 90 pounds for a straight up double of performance, or spend a bit more money for a new card, which isn't double the performance, but a lot better than a single 7950.

if you want to be just single gpu though, ofc go for the 970, but if you have room for a second card, id get another 7950 for 90 quid.

Im going from an MSI 7950 Boost to one of the 970s. Most likely the MSI one as it seems to hit 1500 core easily.

I can clock my card to about 1135/1600 at which speeds is aprox.equal with an r280x. Difference between that and gtx970 it's about 40-50% (give or take)?

In order to upgrade, I need to sell that card and add 2x the amount for a gtx970. Last time, I've went from a 6970 this 7950 a few years back, for just 1x the money I've got for the old one (that was the market price back then) and received between 50-100% boost in performance (now days is probably often close to 100%). That's why personally I don't find the gtx970/980 that great.

Worth to upgrade? If you have troubles with the games you like perhaps, but I wouldn't forget about that 7950 just yet, more so at 1100/1300 or even a little bit beyond.

I had the same card, actually our systems are similar.

I went for it because I was sick of the 7950's heat/noise, personally the thought of getting a 2nd one didnt sound remotely appealing, I could barely keep 1 at reasonable temps, it was over 90 degrees most sessions. I did however make the fan profile quite strict and my cases airflow is poor but...

It did seem an odd upgrade because at 1200p there wasnt much the card was exactly struggling with, a few things I played it was ramping the gpu usage up to 90-95% just to hit 60fps but overall it was perfectly fine for games I played.

After upgrading though, very happy, I can play the same games, get 50-60% usage and sometimes the fans switch off as its not being stressed enough :p

In my opinion, worth it, but I'm far more picky about heat/noise than I probably should be but its a considerable difference in performance alone.

I have the Windforce 7950 and was pressed the button on a 290x (can return as unopened) as I game across three screens and most games sit at 99% usage at the settings I play. I held off installing due to the 9x0 launch, which is appealing, but that Anandtech bench comparison shows the 290x generally pulling ahead at the higher res (other reviews show it a bit closer). I think the 970 is currently the choice for a single (non 4k) screen, but move up to multiple screens and I am not so sure. Decisions decisions.

If you 'want' an upgrade then yeah go for it.

Like I have been reminded countless times, 'is it still doing the job well'?
At your resolution, has the graphical grunt become an issue?
Crossfire would be cheaper and you would get huge performance increase at your resolution.

Have you overclocked your card?

If we take the last gen roll out as a guide, then the full fat GPU's will surface.
