30/09 - GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY!

Hi guys, made the stupid mistake of knocking a cup of water over my PC...

I have pulled everything out of the case. GFX card + hard drives etc. should all be fine as no water reached them.

So, I have motherboard + CPU + RAM + PSU, press power button (tried both front of case and on the actual motherboard), not getting anything...

I have confirmed the PSU is working by trying it in another PC.

So I reckon the motherboard is dead.

Does anyone have any pro tips to try and ressurect the motherboard? If it's not working by Sunday PM, I will be looking to order another Z68 to identify whether it is just the motherboard that is dead, or whether it is worse..

If my CPU is fried too, well guess I will jump onto the newest i5, but would rather a cup of water being knocked over doesn't end up costing me £400 >.<

p.s. I am under the impression that when the PSU is simply plugged in to the motherboard, there should be a LED lighting up somewhere showing there is power to the motherboard (before even pressing the power on button on the case). I am not seeing any light from any LED's. RIP? Anything at all I can try before replacing motherboard??

Apart from drying it out in a airing cupboard I think you are doomed.

Was the PC on when you spilled the drink?

You can quite probably soak any components in water ( not really but bear with me ), and as long as there is no power going through it while there IS any wet, then it will probably start up just fine afterwards.

So, make absolutely syre that its is 100% bone dry BEFORE you even consider trying to start it up and there may be a good chance it will run.

This does NOT apply if its already on of course.

Little use in telling you this, but hey... For next time eh?

No lights on mine with the power supply connected but before pressing power button. The only exception being the LAN port which still has some activity on the LED if your connected to something powered up on the LAN i.e. router or switch.

I would say you've had it, personally. If I was to try anything, it'd be dipping the motherboard in 99.9% alcohol then it letting it dry off for 24 hours.

Water may have got into the pci/cpu sockets etc, give it a good few days to dry out or you could try drying it with a hair dryer.

Thanks guys, I tried putting it in an airing cupboard and trying again but still nothing.

I found a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (B grade) for sale on OCUK for a mere £35 (!!!), so snapped that up.

Will try running my i5 in that. Fingers crossed it was only the MB that died...

Damn if my setup is totally ****ed I am gonna be hella sad. That i5 was a champ ;-(
