HUGE temps after reapplying thermal paste (7970) help!

the temp rise is way too rapid and crashing far too quickly for this to be the thermal paste..

Could be a damaged cooler. I bought a HIS 6850 IceQ X a few years back for my brothers PC and the cooler arrived damaged (it was a card used in an online review). Everything was bolted together perfectly and thermal paste applied properly, but it always reached around 90c in a matter of seconds under load! I found a couple of heatpipes had broken away from the actual heatsink and weren't making proper contact (I think they were originally soldered on).

I don't know if the reference 7970 cooler has any copper pipes under the shroud??

I always apply the TIM in an "X" pattern across the GPU die. Then place cooler on and screw in opposite corners at a time, not fully screwing down until all 4 corners are in place. Then screw in rest of screws around the cooler.

Surely his choice in thermal paste wouldn't effect the temperatures that much, I'm currently using mx2 on my watetercooled 7950 and get great temperatures.
