Hi,

I'm just about to start stripping wallpaper to do some painting and behind the start section that I removed just to see how bad things were, it looks like this:

So question is, can I just pollyfiller these cracks before painting? Or could they potentially be more serious? The parts either side of the cracks seem solid when tapped.

Thanks!

Thanks, yes it's a door below, I haven't stripped the entire wall, but those cracks were evident through the wallpaper, the rest looks ok (as much as it can without removing it).

Another shot

I guess I really need to wait till it's all stripped to tell, but just wondered how bad of a sign it was :)

Just looks like blown plaster to me, tap it, it will probably feel hollow behind it.

I have tons of it around my old house sadly, only remedy is to smash it all off and re plaster the area.

This is sadly almost certainly the case!

Stripping back wallpaper to paint what lies beneath is often a disapointment as the plaster is usually nasty. Personally I'd strip the lot and then get a plasterer round to quote for giving you a paintable finish which wil probably require a combination of stripping back the blown bits and skimming over the better bits, shouldn't be too expensive and should leave you with a perfect finish to paint.
