Microsoft Details DX12 and DX 11.3

Didn't AMD pick and choose who got the Mantle API as well?

Thats you making this thread about Mantle, just so you know when if it comes to you complaining about it later on.

The answer is Mantle is in Beta, those who are working with it are helping develop it before it gets released to the public.

They have never said "oh its dangerous if you don't know what your doing" that seems to me a precursor for imposing selective limitations on developers.

The reasoning that "its dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced" seems to me the start of excuses.

Microsoft picking and choosing why gets the API and who does not, whats the real reason for that?

It is dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced...potentially. Whilst it will probably end up being available to all - if you want a solid launch as to not mar the DX12 'brand' (as it were) then getting 3 or 4 AAA studio engines on it first seems ideal.

Let's be honest, who wants to play Plants Vs Zombies in DX12....nobody cares, nor is it required.

DX12 will be best placed in engines which really need what it will hopefully bring. Quite frankly, how many studios out there develop engines of this calibre...very few?

So DX12 is gpu specific if there is a DX11.3 fall back?

Sounds familiar.:p

Sounds familiar because since.....as long as I can remember - Most DX games have a current DX implementation and an older one...simultaneously.

It's also a pretty good idea to continue developing what the world actually needs - That is a high level API that is widely adopted and very compatible across broad swathes of hardware configurations.

It would be absolutely foolish of MS to bring out DX12 as a low level API and EOL DX11....effectively cutting off all old hardware.

Calm down Humbug, I was merely pointing out that AMD did the same thing with Mantle. It is basic sense to give it to those who are skilled and not just any Tom, Dick or Harry. You understand this as well and just getting worked up for some reason... :D

I hope thats all it is, and not M$ seeing another business opportunity in it

No need to get condescending about it, i'm just pointing it out as there are rather a lot of complaints about threads turning into Mantle threads where the complainants are by those who brought Mantle into the threads. :)

You've posted 3 times in this thread so far and 66% of them have mentioned it.

The only apparent business opportunity I can see is if MS were taking £££ from AMD/nVidia/Hardware 3rd Parties to intentionally EOL DX11 and in turn force people to buy more hardware.

I don't ever see this happening.

Proper Order Independent Transparency should be pretty sweet, particularly in scenes with lots of foliage. If devs use it it then it should see an end to the sharp borders you see around foliage textures (caused by discarding transparent pixels to avoid having to do alpha blending).

Bah, everybody in this thread is so opinionated >.>

I approve of DX12, doubt it will bring as big of an increase to existing games as DX7 did but meh :P
